Dunno. If I run into lane 2 after the race is done wouldn’t that be impeding runners? But that isn’t a DQ but this is? Dumb rule
The race was not over. Competitors were still swimming. This is like standing in lane 2 on the race side of the finish line and celebrating when the race is still happening.
It is more like going out to lane 6 and celebrating while runners finishing in 1-2. The middle lanes had finished the race, there were some slower swimmers in the outside lanes still finishing.
The rules are the rules and he should know them. I have never liked sitting on the lane lines, that should be a rule, but isn't.
The referees were not trying to keep him from celebrating, it was a great race and they work hard for it.
The entire team should have made the rest of the competition a mockery by refusing to leave the pool. Dunking. Running. Pushing. All good fun would get the point across.
Why? What would be the point?
To draw attention to a sport that enforces a rule that should not apply in this case.
We have rules on track such as not stepping outside of your lane, but if you get no benefit from it or if you don't impede on somebody else's to race, we often let it go.
I say keep the rule as is, but allow for a referee to nullify it if the infringement causes no benefit to the swimmer in question or no impediments to the other competitors, which in this case is clearly the case.
The other swimmers should have all asked to be DQd after the race or done something to be DQd (like hand gestures for instance).
Obviously, the OP never watched the video. The DQ is explained and it has nothing to do with celebrating. He just read the click-bait title and posted the link.
Obviously you don’t swim. Swimmers don’t get on top of lane lines if they don’t win. This is how some swimmers celebrate after winning races.
Swimming is generally very strict on rules though this seems to be an ncaa specific rule which the swimmers possibly weren't familiar with. And I'm not even sure it was violated.
Swimmers growing up in the USA Swimming world as all ncaa swimmers do, they may have never considered the ncaa to do something stupid like make there own rules rather than just say Rules: "All meets governed by FINA and USA Swimming rules"
But in an average swim meet there are way more DQs than an average track meet (usually none). But there are probably more unsportsmanlike/celebration related DQs in track.
unless I am missing something the DQ was not for celebrating. It was for entering another lane while the race is in progress. I have no idea if that is an auto call or not.
You aren't supposed to sit on the lane lines. What if they break and the rest of the meet has to get delayed to repair them? This is an easy DQ.
Also by switching lanes while others are still racing he messes with the current of the water. That can affect other racers still competing for time/place.
It seems mild compared to track celebrations but this is a DQ 10 times out of 10 in swimming.
It's a pool, not much of a current there. Besides, the actual competitors swimming in the next lanes cause more turbulence in the water. And note the double-lane lines. That's to help abate the turbulence from the adjacent swimmers.
So you’re going to condone running around the pool deck acting like an idiot, trying to make a mockery of the meet to protest a DQ? WTF?
I don’t understand the mentality of kids these days. Why don’t you put down your phone and grow up, kid.
Pearls clutched. Omg.
Think about it, son. The best idea you could come up with was “The entire team should have made the rest of the competition a mockery by refusing to leave the pool. Dunking. Running. Pushing. All good fun would get the point across.”

I dont have a better idea except that the only way to fight idiots is to throw more idiocy back in their faces.
The kid who finished 2nd is going to give the rightful winner his medal. Problem solved (sort of).

If that was the best idea you could come up with, I’d love to hear the ones that didn’t make the cut. Lol
Problem solved? Now the second place guy doesn’t have a medal. What’s your idea on fixing that? (This should be good) :)
Maybe I’m being a bit quixotic, but I doubt there’s a swimmer in that race that wanted or expected that DQ and think there ought to be a review process whereby opposing teams can protest the result on behalf of the DQd athlete.
Every swimmer knows you don't even get out of the pool until everyone is done swimming. You stay in YOUR lane until every swimmer is done. This is a basic rule of every competition at all levels of swimming.
