Ok, but where do you add a Region? Reality is that California is still the strongest region, but it would be weird to have 2 Regions in California. maybe add one State to southern California and one State to northern california
Nike holds an extra regional in New York, right on the same course and same day as another regional, so they don't need another venue, timing crew, event staff or signage, adding all the resulting spectacle, entry fees and merch sales to their booty haul on that day with minimal excess cost and effort to them.
What about any of that leads anyone to believe any changes will be made? 😏
4 At Large Teams are selected by our committee to create a meet with 28 total teams (closer to the NCAA size)
Individuals would drop to Top 3 Individuals on a non-qualifying team (try to give a little love to our buddy Footlocker so possibly more individuals will return to the individual championship).
I really like the idea of combining NY/NE and just making the spots 2 more team and 5 more individual at-large bids. Nike saves a little cash with only one race and the region catches up to the other regions that are currently far superior. Granted, I am a runner on a team that has a good chance to make it out of the Northeast region next year, and the additional NY teams make it more difficult to qualify. However, the Northeast Region has been extremely weak as of recently and hasn’t seen an at-large bid in a long time. With the combination, maybe Nike will give one of us a shot at the at-large. It’s also frustrating that, other than California, the Northeast can’t do both Foot Locker and NXN. Makes it even more frustrating that an individual on a good team can run well at NXR, barely miss both team and/or individual qualifying, and that’s it, there’s no other chance like the other regions have.
'Quick math' estimate...NXN-NY pulled in roughly $40,000+ just in entry fees alone.
For comparison (albeit not an entirely fair one, but still), only four New York athletes even entered the Foot Locker NE regional boys race in Boston yesterday. That's $160 in entry fees.

I agree, combine NY and NE and make it 4 teams and 10 individuals… only problem is that’s a massive race
This post is also in reference to the boys side, the girls in NY are 100% deserving of their own region. If my research is correct the 2nd place team at NXR couldn’t even go to states because they’re from the same area as Saratoga
The NY region isn't going away. Nike basically holds two regionals for the price of one.
It was a great day at Bowdoin yesterday. Just let it be. All the teams and individuals that made NXN from each region deserve it.

It is clear NY and the NE took a major hit with the pandemic and many have not recovered. I believe the early onset of COVID and strict restrictions on athletics took its toll. We are 2 years removed and there isn't much improvement. It may take some time to get back to where teams were before. For what it's worth, Manhattan frosh races were the fastest they have ever been both individually and team wise by far.
Only a few regions have more than 1 team of super high quality most years. The SW and Cali are the only regions with really good teams beyond 1 or 2 this year. The southeast has one really good team and not much after that, the south is similar though a bit better. My point - what happens when NY has 1 good team again? What would happen if NY, NE and Cali did not have to race the week before NXN? What if travel wasn't difficult from the SE, NE and NY? What if NE/NY did not have run on a difficult course? Teams racing poorly at nationals is not a good indication of a successful season, one deserving a bid to nationals.
We can go on and on about regions and who deserves what bid and their own spot in the race. However, in any given year, any region can have that extra team or two. Simply combining NY and NE is not the right answer. If changes are made, I hope there is some creativity in how they set regions. Create a new region with part of the southeast and NE and add NY to the rest of the NE for example.
It's actually not that big even if you combine both regions. For example if you combine all of the NY boys and NE boys open and championship races, it's about 1100. The SW region had about 2000 boys compete.

Why do you reflexively think another one should be added?
as it has been pointed out, there is a new york region because of the girls. the girls are still running really well. they aren't going to have a separate region for the ladies, but not the men. the men are benefitting from the strength of the ladies. it is what it is.
