We don't know what goes on behind the scenes but guessing from what Jerry did with Birnbaum and others he wanted to also redshirt Burns. But Burns probably pleaded with him to allow him to run.
He ran at conference as well. Not everyone wants to spend 5 years in college to take advantage of a redshirt. Hard to say its a waste without knowing his plans.

This is so true. If he is even a halfway decent student, he'd get his cheap degree as quickly as possible and move on.
Unfortunately, I agree with this. Doubtful that you see him running much faster than his other worldly hs times. I don’t think he’ll even be running seriously in 5 years.
There is something to be said for giving him championship 10k experience so next year when he may be mixing it up in the top 10 it won’t all be new for him.

Not sure that much thought is being put in that Oregon program.
With Burns, Oregon was 7th. Without Burns, they would have been 8th.
