I think we have taken this whole mental health thing in the wrong direction. of course mental illness exists. Of course anxiety exists. And of course we want people to be mentally healthy.
just read where sydney mclaughlin explains her anxiety as a reason for not advancing in 2016 Olympics. Sure I get it. Anxiety is flat out a normal thing and at one time it was that your job was to learn how to manage it. That is part of becoming a responsible person.
Nowadays it is an acceptable excuse in nearly every instance. It gets mixed into mental health as an issue rather than just an emotional episode that should be manageable. Choking in competition isnt a mental health thing. It is an emotional management thing.
truth is we are not always in “our happy place”. We need to manage those moments and that isnt always easy. Overcoming those emotional challenges is a requirement for life.
this doesnt always mean tough love or ignoring things bit it also doesnt mean to simply allow choking to be accepted as mental health.
