2:03? Clearly you haven't ever ran competitively before.
That's not happening under perfect conditions for Galen, zero chance. He can eat his Wheaties and Cherrios combined for breakfast for 7 straight days, he is NOT running 2:03.
Doesn't he actually need to bank the OT standard still for Paris? Assuming yes I could see him not DNF'ing and going 2:11.nn whatever precisely:02s under the standard is
Humans, esp driven ones who have fallen always seem to endeavor to improve their situations, status, perceptions if possible. Americans seem to love a comeback story, we see it all the time in American sports. He will probably never get back in the good graces because he's never really apologized or offered any contrition , but he will probably try in America, Africa or Europe to regain his stature.
He ran 2:09 clearly not healthy last year. So in my opinion he is at least capable of a bit better after hopefully a healthy build up.
After Petros running 2:04 and the Swiss guy 2:05 in Berlin I'm very excited for Mantz. He seems like a brave racer. I could see him go 4 the AR.
Why would Mantz run fast because Petros and Abraham did it? They are not in the same training group, nor is Mantz on their level. Also, Petros is with Adidas, Abraham with On, and Mantz with Nike (if I am remembering correctly).
Still early but the weather is looking good for next weekend. It's still going to be warm until the middle of the week but then some rain will hit & will bring lower temps with it. Looks like the couple of days before/after the marathon are all good running weather days.
2019 is a good comp year. Idk what Galen has left in him but this could be one of his final chances to run something really fast. This should be a good day for Americans in general. Should get a lot threatening 2:10/2:11. Chicago announced Korir, Mesfun, and Chelanga as late additions. Those guys could all run well.
The front of this race should be fast. Hopefully the guys that were denied Berlin entry let it rip here. Think Kiptoo should have a strong debut. AR chase should be on for Sisson, with faster women in the field who just saw someone run 2:11.
Someone from the NAU team posted a pic with him on Strava in flag. If he is in flag then I say he is down to run fast and competitively. Last time that I recall he was in flag was before the Olympic trials and he dog walked that field(obviously not very high caliber guys compared to himself) but he handily dealt with them. If we see anything like we saw then it’ll be a good race!
I predict he will race 'conservatively' to get the Olympic standard, and run 63:30-64:00 through the half. And really, if he's actually in good shape that's close enough to close in 63 or faster to run 2:06. The weather is looking great. He ran 2:06:30 two years ago on a warm and windy day.
