Wightman did the same thing last year after beating Ingebrigtsen. No reason to. A lot to lose and nothing to gain by beating him again. He already won the biggest race of the year.
Nah, Wightman always planned to run 1500 at Worlds and CWGs then focus on the 800 for the rest of the year. He ran 5th Avenue because it's basically a fun run for elites, no pressure, bit of a party afterwards.
Kerr should race the DL final. It doesn't matter if he loses, it would prove nothing other than what we already know: Jakob excels in a paced race (he'll have pacers in Eugene). Kerr really has nothing to lose in the DL final, he's already won the one prize that matters this year, so that being the case, he should turn up and just give it a shot.

Yeah, with Wightman it was more of impressive that he stayed on the planned course even though he became world champion.
It would be huge for Kerr if he snagged another W against JI, solidifying his status. But honestly I can see how you cant muster much for that last competition.

I don't understand this logic. What does Kerr lose by running the DL final? This isn't a gun duel or even a boxing world title fight.
Kerr is the reigning 1500 champ and he'll be the reigning world champ regardless of what happens in any race until at least 2025.
For me to believe Kerr is hands down the superior 1500 runner to JI, I'd have to see him beat JI again this season.
A miler's peak is short. Manangoi, Cheruyoit, Wightman all came and went without really capitalizing on their Worlds victory. If I were Kerr, I'd ride the hot hand as long as I could.
Tf do you mean Cheruiyot didn't capitalize on his Worlds victory? He even was the world champ for 3 years

It would, but I wouldn't count on it. Kerr is a consummate championship racer. His best results in 2019, 2021, 2022, and now 2023 have all come in the finals of major champs. He pulls out his best when it matters most. Personally, I hope he takes in as much cash as he can and fully takes advantage of his status. Nike/Pre needs to pay him well because if the race goes off without him, it will feel a little hollow
He already proved he's superior by beating him when it most mattered this year. That's what the WC were for, to see who is the best of the best. Jakob beating him in some paced race means very little. But if you define superiotity based on fast times or number of wins in regular races, sure Jakob is better.

Everyone has a price. Is what Kerr expects to earn in this race worth the risk of losing to Jakob? If he's not racing it means he isn't getting paid enough.

First place in a DL Final is worth $30,000, seems pretty good for about 3.5 minutes of work. Curious to know what he's getting paid for the 5th ave mile.
Seems oddly inconsistent that he ran races he didn't want to just to qualify for the DL finals, then drop out. Or...he's just messing with everyone and will change his mind at the last minute and run the finals.

Well, he's world champ now, so that changes things.. maybe he's got enough cash that the potential $30k wouldn't be worth it. What's the 2nd place prize?
Btw - 5th ave is worth it for the publicity.. so even if they don't pay well, he gets a chance to grow his image. Eugene is a tiny little bubble and nobody will be paying attention.

He said the DL final was his plan after he was World Champ.

Why would anyone believe Kerr is "hands down superior" to JI? That's laughable.
There head to head record is 10 wins for Ingebrigtsen, 1 for Kerr.
It would be like saying in 2008 that you think Eli Manning is better than Tom Brady simply because the Giants beat the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Even if Kerr beat JI in Eugene, I wouldn't think he's hands down superior to JI - far from it.

You are joking right? Way more people will watch the DL finale in Eugene than 5th avenue. Way more.
Plus if Kerr did Eugene he could possibly get the British record.
Random anecdote. I asked some members of the British press members before the WC final in Budapest who was a bigger deal in the UK - Wightman who won Worlds or Kerr who won an Olympic bronze. They laughed and said, "Wightman." We'll see if that changes now that Kerr is also a world champ but they did say they thought Kerr wasn't as high profile in the UK as he's based in the states. I don't know why people woul really care where you train.

It's $30k but he loses 15% of that right off to his agent so it's already down to $25.5k, and let's assume he doesn't win because it's a paced race which suits Jakob, so Kerr may get $12k for 2nd, or $10.2k once agents fees are paid. Then he has taxes so his prize money could easily come in under $7k. Then he might have to pay travel and accommodation (I doubt it, Brooks probably stump up for that but you never know). Do you really want to travel to Eugene for a little over $5k if you've already won the biggest and most important race of the year? At least NY offers the chance of a nice vacation around the race and a chance for some beers with people he knows.
And that's why meets need to pay people appearance fees
