If it was real beef he would have thrown hands after the finish and squashed it right then and there. The Ethiopian bullied him because Mantz never intimidated him at all. Probably thought he's another typical weak American who likes to complain on social media. Mantz should have been awarded the win and the Ethipoan DQ but this is a microcosm of the sport and life--cheating pays off, baby. Unfortunate and harsh truth, but it's the reality of things.
Need a better angle but the short segment looked like mantz was trying to pass where there was no room and the guy defended his line. But it was a crappy angle to see exactly what was going on.
The video wasn't that bad. Clearly he pushed a bit, but Mantz was really trying to squeeze through when he should've just waited until the turn was over. Looked like they probably make a bit a contact and then Yihune pushed back against it. Neither really that necessary.
Yeah, based on the crybaby descriptions on here I expected a shove or worse. There was nothing in that contact. Stop making distance runners look so GD soft.
i took a look at the video. i think mantz was impeded. regardless of whether we was trying to pass or not, it appears yihune put a forearm out and leaned a bit. it certainly hurt mantz's momentum.
regardless, in reading his strava post, i don't think he belabored it. i think he said he felt he got what he needed out of the race regardless.
it was a strong effort by a promising american marathoner. i do not understand the negativity in this thread.
Agree with all. They came around the corner fairly wide actually, so he was already fading Mantz toward the fence, then grabbed him in what looked like a deliberate move. Definitely impeded Mantz. I suppose Mantz should’ve pushed hard back, &, perhaps he will next time.
Yeah, babies don’t run 27:58 on the road and consistently place top 2 in road races. Sincerely doubt you can run a 3200 at his race pace. Moreover, most posters say Mantz is an old man who should be completing his fourth red-shirt year at BYU (even as he completed his college stint in four years in totality), so which is it? Dude is a stud who has a right to be irritated.
I agree. A little of what you said + that granule of truth that the ethiopian likely knew what he was doing. Nascar rules...if you fender(arm or hip) is under him, he has to yield that line comin outta turn 3! He sure made it hard. I have for some time been telling my runners (I don't even want to tell you how young -all the way to 18) how to not be a victim on the track. Protect you space, get that elbow out, but dont extend the arm and make it obvious. But if someone is going to trip you or edge you out, you have a right to your space. Protect it, but dont be obvious. Get out fast. My best runner was knocked down, literally pushed to the track recently. Guy got DQed, but i want to prevent it in the first place. Track is getting dirty lately as we have seen, our job is teach them to be aware and stay out of trouble, while we wait for the officials to have a tribunal hopefully soon to crack down on this crap. I think you have to coach "self defense" of sorts now. Although its not "pushing" per se, you are even seeing people cut off a dozen runners, literally hop in front of someone to avoid getting boxed. Real risky moves in DL etc....
I’ve never seen him be annoyed once with another athlete before Saturday. Actually, Mantz’s training is pretty damn smart and gives him results. Very similar to how I trained in high schooo w a day off after the progressive long run. My only critique would be that I think he needs to allow more recovery after marathons.
