At this point, unlikely that Parker & Katelyn will have another go at it at NCAAs . . .
Per KT's post-race interview last weekend at Sound Running's Track Fest . . . she/coach are leaning towards just the 1500 at NCAAs . . . in prep for the 5k at USAs in July.
She is concentrating on the 1500 to dodge competition in the 5000.
That is a very uninformed take.
The 1500m is much more competitive this season. There are two runners within 10ths of a second of her, and others who can run her down over 200m in any tactical race. A win in that event is far less likely. Besides, she talked about doing the 1500m back in indoors.
If she even makes it to nationals, she needs to heal her leg!
You’re cracked. Valby won the SEC against arguably the strongest competition in the NCAA - the Alabama women.
Tuohy won a 10K in a time that is slower than some people can walk a 10K 😂
yeah and one week ago, she broke the 5000m collegian record against an even stronger field, by the way the Alabama girls didn't defeat Tuohy in indoor. But keep laughing, that shows us how dumb you are.
Didn't she win the 3000 and the 5000 in indoors? so why would she win the 1500 and then lose the 5000m. Do you know she just broke the 5000m outdoors last week?
I truly hope they face off at the 5000m. rivalries are what make a sport, and there hasn't been a rivalry like this in college track and field in years.
for some reason I have a feeling the next time we see them run against each other is the XC Championships. (or Nuttycombe)
I'm not a super fan of either athlete, but if this is a rivalry it seems one manufactured by each athlete's hardcore fan bases and projection rather than anything that has happened on the track (or grass of XC).
By my count they raced 3 times last year, with Tuohy winning all three times. Valby has sat out most of 2023 while Tuohy has one two NCAA titles and set 3 indoor and one outdoor NCAA records.
I feel like three head to heads and one sided results make it hard as a neutral to look at this and think "look at that rivalry." As a non American looking in, Tuohy seems to be a totally different level of athlete.
Valby was severely overcompensating and favoring one leg for the last mile of that 5K. It was painful to watch! Though it's worth mentioning that the Alabama girls seemed scared of her and, ultimately, that intimidation + late race traffic allowed her to nudge the victory.
Tuohy ran 20 seconds faster in good conditions in a paced race that she lost. Valby won a championship race that she led for the final 90%. I guess Dylan Jacobs will lose to every guy who ran sub 13:30,outdoor also.
Am I the only one who thinks that the owners have to be loving the "engagement" that comes from Tuohy/Valby mania? Or that maybe BroJos aren't above giving the T/V stans a nudge every now and then? I mean seriously, some of those stans can't be real people, can they?
Rivalries bring out the worst in us as sports fans. They make us hateful people who might flip off an old lady wearing a Dodger cap (don't ask). They make us even more obsessive about our teams than we normally are...
Moreover, a rivalry can be compelling when one athlete or team is on top, and the rival is trying to take their spot. One classic example is the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons during the Michael Jordan era. They met in the playoffs four years in a row from 1988-1991. The first three years, the Pistons won the series and advanced to the NBA Finals, ultimately winning two championships. During those years, the Pistons applied “the Jordan Rules” in which they played aggressive physical defense on Jordan to limit his effectiveness. After the third consecutive year of losing to the Pistons, Jordan started lifting weights and gained 15 pounds of muscle so he could better withstand the Pistons defense. The next year, Jordan’s Bulls finally beat the Pistons and went on to win the championship.
With Tuohy and Valby, one of the things that makes it exciting is the question of whether Valby will ever beat Tuohy. It made for riveting theatre when Valby built a huge lead at the NCAA cross country championships, only for Tuohy to run her down.
If Valby is not yet on Tuohy’s level, she is at least very, very close. The fact that Valby ran 15:25 last night while running from the front in hot and humid conditions on only one good leg shows that she is a fantastic athlete.
Title is clearly clickbait but worked. Valby is impressive. I'm not sure she has learned what her body can and cannot take before breaking. 13 mile runs if indeed the case mentioned on this board is rough on the body at any speed on any surface. I think she was a swimmer in her earlier years. They can train for several hours a day, runners can't. She will either figure it out or be broken most of the time. I like watching her run though. That pull away with around 2 laps to go was awesome at the SEC conference meet.
