They didn't even know of runner's dystonia 35 years ago, did they? It seems like a very new diagnosis. Did you struggle with it for all those years? Has anything improved it for you?
He ran 2:09 at the World Champs last year after a seemingly terrible training cycle. It sounds like he is still dealing with ups and downs of recovering from injury, and back injuries can linger.
Apologies to Mantz and Fauble, but if Rupp shows up on February 3rd with a decent training cycle he is still hands down the favorite.
That said, I'd love a Ben True resurgence and to see him firing on all cylinders for the trials.
All runners (elite, average or below) have their own biological clock. Some tap out early and others continue on. Why bash a guy who has performed better at all levels than anyone posting on this board?
I thought I was elite caliber back in the day. But runner's dystonia sent me on another path at 24 years old (didn't find out the cause until some 35 years later). Sucked at the time, but that was that.

I found out about the diagnosis on Letrun forums just a few years ago.
In 1984 & 85, the doctors had no clue. Even went to the Olympic Training Center to be tested and observed. Had an exploratory surgery that was useless (and caused some nerve damage). At that point I couldn't put in the type of training necessary nor could I race to my potential because the leg would, when fatigued, have a mind of its own. I'm 63 now. Thankfully, I don't have the severe problem of falling or having a hard time walking like I've heard others do. But I still have the issue.
My last race was the 1984 Olympic Trials. I was eliminated in the heats in both the 5 and 10. It was a wonder I even qualified that year given I was running on one leg.
Can't argue Salazar is a great coach. Nemerous ahletes that have left him have fallen off a cliff. Even Levins fit that billing until his recent resurgence.
Yomif Kejelcha Just Misses World 5k Record With 12:50 Win In Lille.
I'm not saying he SHOULD retire nor that I WANT him to retire. Just saying when he finishes 3 minutes behind in a race where he used to be competitive he's gotta be thinkin' retirement
I hate to reply to this post, but it's racist, incorrect, provides nothing of substance to the thread, and it's been up for 20 hours. Am I really the first one to report it? If not, why is it still up when we were told that the average response time for reported posts is under an hour?
That does suck. I've been told recently I have it. I've probably had it for 25 years now and had no idea what the problem was so it's at least good to hear something other "I really don't know what it is."
Unlike the other Americans he actually lines up against the best. Where was Connor and the others. Best American in modern history. Two medals in two events. End.of story.
True. It's just the woketards at work because they're filled with self-hate. If Rupp were anything but a paleface, the same crabby cowards would be kissing his tail while singing his praises.

Sorry to hear that. From what I know and have experienced, there's not much you can do about it. Not the end of the world. Just can't run or run as fast anymore. Now, at my age, that doesn't matter.

I've been given three options. One is a drug called trihexiphenidyl. Another is shockwave treatment and the third is botox injections. I haven't started any of this yet. Nothing is guaranteed but I would love to be able to run at least semi normally again even at 70.
I followed Rupp’s running from his HS days and through college and his pro career. He set multiple ARs, won multiple NCAA and US championships, and collected silver and bronze Olympic medals. He was a dominant US runner for many years. Galen Rupp was a great one.
Now his body is aging and I wonder If running through these chronic injures, just to squeeze out a few more mediocre (for him) years, is worth the long term damage on his body.
If it were me I’d retire and find some new passion. But he’s wired differently and his mindset for not giving up may be the difference between great runners like Galen Rupp and mediocre runners like the majority of us on letsrun.

I have been seeing patients with dystonia, including runners, since 1986.
Calling it 'runner's dystonia' is new, the condition is not.

Where were you when I needed you most?! All joking aside, for me there was a complete vacuum when it came to diagnosing, let alone treating. I had an experimental poplatiel (sp?) entrapment surgery that was a disaster and tore up the inside of my leg behind the knee for good. Probably medical malpractice, but the doc is likely dead by now.
I just wanted to find out how good I could have been. Back then, sub 28 was considered world class. I was with the 6 guy breakaway group with 5 to go and I was full of run. Guess what? 4 of the 6 broke 28, Number 5 was 28:01. Where was I? 10th in 28:21 still not feeling like I was working hard, but couldn't control my damn leg. Sorry for the rant, but you can see a little frustration coming through - even after all this time.
