as for the california teachers... given the typical propensities of that state as a whole, im sure I don't quite care for their grievances either.

I don’t know if all districts, states, whatever are as absurd as mine, but we could probably help teacher pay by cutting superintendent pay by 10%. A small increase for each teacher I suppose, but where I am teachers start at about 35k while the superintendent takes home 250k. Even given the matter’s leadership responsibilities that disparity is ridiculous and suggests there’s probably waste elsewhere in the budget that could be handed over to the teachers. Or at least used to buy some damn supplies so teachers aren’t spending their own money on them - which is basically, school pays teacher, teacher pays Walmart, Walmart supplies stuff to school. Only the teacher ends up with neither money nor things.

My husband has been a public high school teacher for the past 20 years. He is paid around $45k annually. He does not work six hour days - he spends hours outside of designated school days grading, formulating lesson plans, meeting with students and parents, faculty meetings, and responding to emails/messages on the portal. Many days he works more than I do. He cares deeply about his students and providing quality education. I do wish he was valued more. I suspect many of the people here who complain about teachers do not know them personally, but rather in theory, as a means to get their kid into UCLA, Harvard etc. Well educated children begin well before college.

Hey OP, I've got a great idea! Since "Teachers suck", let's lower the teacher pay scale. Surely that will attract higher quality individuals to the profession.

Good for them. As I said in the other post about this, if teachers got paid more they would be better quality, kids would be smarter, and then everyone would be smarter. I'm all for it.

Agreed. If they wanted to get paid lots of money for doing nothing of value, they should have been bankers or done some other work designed to make rich people richer.

Ignoring the debate altogether and focusing on just the numbers--what is the greatest lower bound on compensation for public school teachers such that the people perpetually grieving about salary and benefits would be happy with it and never ask for more?

For simplicity state it in today's dollars (or as a % of highest income earners) and assume it keeps up with inflation. Give three numbers-- starting salary, average salary, and % of highest salary that you receive as a perpetuity.

For example, is a starting salary of 1 billion dollars, an average salary of 10 billion dollars, and retirement funding of 100% enough?

More reasonably, is a starting salary that is in the top 50% nationally, an average salary in the top 70% nationally, and retirement funding of 60% enough?

Just give hard numbers and an explanation why, I'm curious as to the results.

Didn't they just get done striking? I'm starting to think the whole concept of striking is to duck doing any actual work.

Show up with signs, donuts, meat smokers, stand by the road and let people honk at u while ur havin basically a protest tailgate. Probably vodka in those thermoses.
