NC State lost by 11.38 seconds with a solid final leg of 4:35.02. Do the math. Tuohy would have made it VERY exciting.
going a little further with this, Tuohy running 1600 puts Bush on the 1200 leg over shaw. Good chance this is enough to put them over the top. Not sure if shaw would then move from 1200 to 800, or maybe hartmann is better at that distance anyway.
Great race from Bush. They were in 11th 5 seconds back of 10th when she got the stick and she ran the 3rd fastest anchor split to take them to 8th and scoring points.
catching up with W portion over:
Those who inisted 5000 would be SLOW were very right. I am still amazed a Stearns or Venters or someone let Mercy set the slow pace.
Tuohy did seem to be bothered by something on her heels for much of the race. I thought she looked too tired to run a decent mile 25 minutes later even if they let her.
WA led off w Markzich and anchored with O'Sullivan. Gibson did not look good in mile and did not run as far as I can see.
Gregory gave her all and ran amazing 4:31 at altitude.
I thought ND with the fresh team would do well in DMR and they did. of course I thought the same thing about BYU (:
Bush as others noted ran great - that might be her fastes 1600/mile ever
In the TX/AR team battle things seem to be going pretty much to form so TX still looks like favorite. Wilson of AR looked very strong in her 400.
Also amazed the non 800/mile types in the 1st heat of the mile let that go so slow.
Tobias of TX looked very good in her 800 heat adding to team chances.
FL is done w no Valby. no points from Barret
I see a protest in DMR - can't be NC St 2 years in a row can it?
One other thing I thought I saw Whitaker go thru 800 at about 2:14 which for her at altitude was way too fast and she paid for it but held on....barely.
As much as I am in awe of her ability and performances this season, there's no way i can think Tuohy would get too close to her to her PR 25 minutes after her DMR finished and at altitude. I know it wasn't the fastest 5k but its still 3 miles on her legs and she kicked the end. I could buy 4:28 maybe
Is Cook healthy enough to do more than challenge Seymour for 10th? Will Olemomoi’s Oct--Feb body of work trump one crappy race? Having Chelangat close should steady her effort & pacing and I’ll take a KT/HO/MC trifecta all day--at sea level. Tonight, no tellin’ how altitude and Cook’s fitness will twist things.
I'm super curious to see how Cook and Stearns do. Why Olemomoi so far back?
I thought altitude and inexperience would get her and wasn't 100% sure the sea level scenario above would carry over. Happy I was wrong but not thrilled about Cook's result.

Why? NC State is nowhere near the team title, even with 10 points from the DMR.

I am not advocating it but maybe Tuohy could have run 4:30 and Bush could have run 2:05 on 800 so drop 9 seconds and maybe they are 3rd with Tuohy pretty gassed tonight.

No chance. Tuohy ran only 4:24.26 on the fast BU track completely fresh while chasing Monson and Morgan. The altitude alone makes it a 4:30.15. Twenty minutes after that 5K, Tuohy would not have run as fast as Bush did. If Tuohy ran, they may have ended up 9th behind Kentucky.
Just watched replay of the Tuohy 5K win. She made it look easy. Imagine what she can do with some altitude training. The two Alabama women should have made it hard from the gun instead of turning it into a mile race playing into Tuohy’s strength. Although, I don’t think she would have lost that way either. She’s definitely is separating herself from the NCAA competition. Looking forward to the 3K. Don’t see her losing.
It didn’t look like it during the race but she never looked comfortable so maybe? She kept yo-yo ing back and forth with big surges then only to be passed again. One time going out really wide. I’m guessing she was such a front runner in HS that the inexperience of running in a very crowded pack worked against her. She never settled in. The pack didn’t break up and give people room to run until the end- by then all her random pace changes seemed to get to her? Anyways- my 2 cents from what I saw:
