With Brosnan being at UCLA, this makes more sense to Sahlman to return home with his high school coach that made him into one of the best high school distance runners ever. Mike Smith is a great coach, but his style does not seem to be working out for the great talent in Sahlman.
Hopefully he can run well outdoor. Maybe he was injured and missed training. We really don't know. I thought a RS would have made more sense this indoor and maybe outdoor season, but I'm not his coach and no one posting on here is his coach.
I feel like there are so many threads, or mentions in other threads, about how so-and-so should transfer to UCLA etc, etc.
Pretty sure it's just Sean or someone close to him that shill this stuff over and over. Probably hoping that Colin or someone close to him will catch wind and start to reconsider their decisions.
Definitely a lot of rushed judgement going on. Sahlman is in a good spot and his talent is still on showcase with this recent 800 and his 28:33 10k during XC.
It could just be some setbacks for Sahlman, but I also noticed over recent years that Smith doesn’t do well to develop true Mid-D runners. His best milers are also his best 5k and 10k runners, which is useful, but not exactly conducive to the development of each runner individually.
People are panicking way to quickly about Sahlman. He just ran 1:49 with a 51 first lap and has been working on his endurance at altitude. He could legitimately run 3:36 outdoors this year. The thing about milers is that once they’ve built up a good strength base and work on speed a bit things can click together fast. A lot of talented milers get sharp quick once they have decent fitness.
There are plenty of milers who struggle to break four indoors and run mid 3:30’s outdoors. Sahlman could be one
Genetics and not the coach determine a runner’s best distance(s). Runners like Nur, Young and Grijalva are never going to be middle distance runners and the UW milers are not going to be near the front in NCAA XC.
We don’t know what’s going with Colin. He’s better in the 5000m than the 800m so building strength during the fall should be beneficial to him.

He just won an NCAA team championship at NAU. Why would he leave that behind for a team that will not even qualify in the next 3 years?
I think Brosnan himself keeps coming here and posting this. It would be IDIOTIC for Sahlman to go to UCLA.

You should never panic over the results of a freshman adjusting to a new training program. I don't start worrying until the 2nd year.
Midway through Centro’s freshman year at UO a bunch of us east coasters were hell bent on him transferring to AU to run for his dad. He struggled and watched people like Evan Jager (who he beat handily as a HSer) make ncaa finals.
A year later he ran 3:36 at Stanford and one more after that he was a WC bronze medalist.

The guy is 6 months into his collegiate career with a very competent coach and you're already telling him to jump ship? Come on lol

None of us know what's really going on.

He coached an NCAA mile champ. Can we stop with the slander?
