Here is a video of the foul and our reaction to it:
Bump. I see that too but can’t find the story anywhere
Just saw the revised results.
Let them race.
Was this mentioned on broadcast?
if only there had been a thread 17mins ago pointing this out...
Let them race is some BS.
same thing happened to fisher at worlds. If someone passes you going into the turn and immediately diagonally cuts you off where you have to break stride or collide, they should be DQd.
If you want to get in front of someone cleanly, then slow down, that’s fair and letting them race.
African runners do this often, men and women, and no DQs.
either follow the rules or change the rules if you want roller derby.
final word. If I was the one being cut off, I’d be very tempted to not slow down and either take them down with me or give them a righteous push with my hand on their hip. they would def be less likely to do it again.
So no one knows why he was DQ'd? I know no one cares about indoors but damn, you would atleast think they would release a statement about a DQ that determined the national champion in a marquee event.
What?! OMG.! WOW?! As I nearly fell off my chair as this happened during one of my hourly naps as I say let them race as my friend agrees.
It’s very clear. First half of last turn
It was a ticky tack call. For an indoors race, very benign infraction. Bummer.
So now he’s racing as an American again?
My EXACT thoughts.
For anyone who didn’t watch, Thompson cut in on Henry Wynne prematurely while to passing him with 70 meters to go. Wynne lost his momentum and ended up settling for third in a decently close race.
I don’t think Wynne finishes first if Thompson doesn’t cut him, but it was a cheap/lazy move and shouldn’t be ignored.
I was watching it live and I cringed telling my wife, "ooh, what a dumb move by Thompson, he didn't have to do that..." DQ.. Wynne wouldn't have won, but it is a DQ.
Watching it live I was not surprised by a DQ. Not egregious but he certainly cut in early on Wynne without proper room to do so. A shame because he had enough left to pass legally.
Prakel goes from perpetual bridesmaid to double winner.
I asked whether Wynne would protest Thompson cutting in on him, noting the arm wrestling on the last curve, in the live discussion thread and seven people downvoted me.
I'm not saying I agree with the DQ, but if I was Wynne or his coach, I would file protest. I don't like it, but that's the game.

Wonder if it was Wynne that protested or someone else.

If I was coaching Wynne and he asked me to file a protest, I'd say, "Nope. It had no impact on the race." And if I filed one, I'd be ashamed.
Our sport is a joke when we reverse the total outcome of sporting events for non-essential fouls.
Weldon pulled up the replay and told me to watch the race as there was a DQ and I was like, "That's a joke."
For probably over a decade, I've said our rulebook needs a rewrite. There has to be some sort of common sense put into the rulebook. Let's say there is a foul between two people clear of the field. The punishment shouldn't be you are thrown out of the results. It should be you are placed second.
Here. No DQ. The foul clearly din't impact the outcome of the race. Thompson wins that 100 times out of 100 if you rerun the final 100 again and Wynne was going to be third no matter what.
Now I get what some of you are going to say, "But you don't want people cutting other people off with 50 meters to go." 100% true. So it's a little hard to write into the rule book as it's hard to trust these people with subjectivity (but hey they aren't always objective -they let Mo Farah run all over the infield without a DQ at that one worlds). But in the NFL they don't call pass interference if the pass was uncatchable. If the foul didnt impact the outcome, then don't call it.
Now what if the foul had caused Wynne to finish 3rd when he would have been 2nd. THen it gets a little dicey but that's not what happened here and that DQ was a joke and reminded me of the GG DQ nearly 10 years ago.
Actually, Weldon just looked up the rule book. Maybe it has been changed from what I remembered.
Maybe it has been changed.
The refs are supposed to consider "severity of the infraction and resulting consequence" of the foul.
Here the severity of the foul was tiny in terms of the amount of contact- he barely touched him - althought it was in the final 100 so I guess that makes it sever. But the "resulting consequence" was zero. Wynne was done.
So no foul in my book.
Danny Mackey protested on an infraction that played no part in the results exactly like Alberto Salazar did with Gabe
