As Jakob found out at world's in the 1500m (or El G in 2000) No one is guaranteed the win. However, Any American has to get through the trials first (no guarantee for that either) and show up August 19th ready to go. Until then why should Jakob need to worry. Given what happened to Nuguse 2 years ago, that should be HIS worry. Hocker has been there two years ago (in the final) but who knows who might be ready this year at that time. That is why they have the trials and championships - not award a medal for what you did in a meet in February. Kejelcha hasn't exactly set the world on fire since his 3.47 indoors.
Yes, I thought it through. Track has records, but Jakob didn't set any significant one, so it is not relevant. I never said Wightman is the best, nor did I say that whoever wins the world championship is automatically the best. I simply said that Jakob cannot claim to "still be the best" after losing the most important 1500 race of the last season. I don't think it is clear who is the best, but people who finish second don't get to claim it. Otherwise, why have a global championship at all? People can just do time trials and send in the results.
Jakob won the Olympic 1500 because it played to his strengths. He lost the WC because it didn't. It remains unclear if he is the best 1500 runner, or just the best in certain kinds of 1500 races and therefore vulnerable to being outkicked if the race doesn't play out how he wants it to. I think this uncertainty and how the various players tactically approach it is what will make the 1500 in Budapest one of the most interesting races to watch.
So was El G not the best miler in the world in 2000?
Why not just come out and say you think Wightman was the best last season? It can’t be anyone other than him or Ingebrigtsen. Jake won the world final, Jakob won everything else. Pick one.
Jakob was the best if there were rabbits (intentional or not) but not the best if there weren’t. Kipyegon showed she was the best no matter what. I don’t think you had that on the men’s side in 2022.

Everyone loves to dump on Kejelcha, but he got Silver and was right there with Kejelcha in the Worlds 10K. . And that Doha meet was especially far removed from Indoors as one of the latest Worlds ever. He hasn't done well in Global Finals in '21 and '22, but has run plenty of great times, nonetheless. So I don't think that's really where to go with this. In reality, there're probably fewer fluky indoor standouts than people think. Samuel Tefera is probably the best example, but his issues seem to be more around rounds of outdoor Championships than performing outdoors in general where he has high DL finishes/solid PBs.
Yes, Nuguse has a ways to navigate before thinking about Jakob at Worlds. America has more than 3 good 1500/milers while Jakob gets to pick his races with no Trials. Ritz's crew bigger struggle last year was peaking for Worlds not the Trials, but he will certainly make adjustments.
Good god. 6'1 and 128 pounds?!?? That is really gross. I don't know what you people see in these guys. This Kejecha guy looks like a skeleton on a diet
Mods, help me understand - it's fine for me to dish out controversial political takes, saying that US distance running has been lacking talent over the past few decades and is just now starting to catch up with Europe and Africa isn't allowed? This has happened to two of my posts, make it make sense.
Jakob is the best, and I love that he’s willing to just come out and say it. None of this false modesty bs. He has no qualms putting pressure on himself and making sure the target is squarely on his back, and that’s the mark of a champion’s champion.
This is what is almost a big culture shock for me as a Norwegian. How is an olympic champion, a world champion, world indoor record holder etc saying he is the best so problematic for people. If he can't say it no-one can. It is so hard to understand what is seen as right or wrong, in my eyes saying that f.ex Nuguse is better than Jacob is worse as he don't have anything to back it up (yet).
Yup. My fellow Americans believe feelings=facts. The US really sucks right now. Peace.
