As far as I can tell they only send people they think have a chance of a medal, whether that be individual or team. Hence them sending the team for the mixed relay. But for me, the senior men and women's teams are the most important so I find it sad they are only sending one man. I wonder what the cost per athlete is? The main cost may be the flights and then there is accommodation. I can't see food and drink adding up to much and the team doctor and physiotherapist are already there. I'd love to see a costing per athlete to see what it is.
At least a bit of mud. Pics from the test event at this link:
"Expect the course to be dry and a tinderbox e.g. in May 2022, there was a small bushfire nearby. The course is very open to the elements, without much vegetation."
Apart from the the small stream crossing, which I guess will be smaller than the picture in the article given that was winter and now it's the height of summer, there won't be mud.

A bushfire would certainly spice the event up a bit...

The test event was run on August 7th - also known as "the middle of winter" in Australia.
Mid February is the height of Summer. That little dam that they ran through will be dry as a bone.
"The test event was held in a cool August day and brought mud into play… a warm February event will be much different, but will still feature a water crossing dubbed ‘the Billabong.’ "

How many officials, coaches and team managers do these countries send? Would be interested to see everyone that goes and what their roles are.
Not many as far as I can tell. It's been trimmed down a lot.
Team Staff Team Leader: Eamonn Martin Team Coach: Andrew Henderson Team Manager: Laura Burke Medical: Sam Harkin (Team Doctor); Lachlan Bromley (Physiotherapist)
I do wonder if it had been in say Denmark or Belgium whether they would have sent a full men's team and whether the cost per athlete is pretty much the most it's ever been due to location?

Is there a need to attend World Cross halfway around the world?
Doesn't SPAR European cross country champs satisfies British need every year?
Not just Britain that aren't bothering sendng athletes to World Cross Country, Ireland had several standout performances at Euro XC and they are sending a grand total of 0 athletes to Australia. Despite several seemingly eligible. Once in a lifetime opportunity to run against the best in the world especially for the youngsters in the Junior category. Would also mean they get to visit a part of the world they might never do otherwise. Genuinely baffling decision from Great Britain and Ireland.
I think it’ll largely be a case of athletes not wanting to go to Australia and interrupt their training for the rest of the season. I’m sure British Athletics would love to send a full time and definitely do have enough runners who are capable, but not enough who are willing to go

That's a fair reason for the seniors not to go but send the juniors(u20). There's literally nothing to lose for them. It's a once off race. Australia are taking Ky Robinson back from Stanford mid track season. For u20s there's nothing to lose and everything to gain.
