Maybe the French understand you have to stand up for yourself against the Oligarchs.

Americans have been propagandized into thinking it frivolous and lazy to fight for yourself.

Not really.

First of all, just comparing GDP per capita and average income in US $ says absolutely nothing about the living standards in these countries. Healthcare and worker rights protection are way better in a lot of European countries compared to the US. Not to mention that the US in the only advanced economy where vacation time is not mandatory.

I would think that the living standard of the average Francois Baguette is much higher than that of the average Joe Six Pack

U.S. has more billionaires than any nation in the world. Good chance some tiny countries have more billionaires per capita. French do not bow to their 40 plus billionaires as many U.S. citizens bow to the 700 plus billionaires here. Billionaires in U.S. enjoy their lifestyle because U.S. has millions of capitalist stooges or we can call them billionaire cheerleaders.

The French way of life is outstanding. And French workers actually are among the most productive in the world, at 80.1, 10th in 2021, vs. 8th for the US 83.8.

For older white males, the French way of life is now better. A generation ago, a guy like me would have been better off here in America, but the social justice warriors are destroying it. Now I am going to get eternally passed over for every promotion and get bad performance ratings because I am not sufficiently dedicated to diversity. Those old French guys are still holding down the top of the food chain in that socialist paradise.
