Nobody really cares about the World Championship team.
Nobody really cares about the World Championship team.
who cares about the World Championships.....the world, except sprint crazy USATF
since, the last time an American has produced a medal contender, Mark Platjes
NYC would be the worst for logistics and publicity for running as a sport. NYC is isolated and out of touch with America. NYC is in it's own, old fashioned fantasy island. NYC is out of the spotight of the rest of the United States. It would be better to have the trials in a place which matches Beijing's weather conditions.
Yes. As everyone is aware, the Olympic Trials site is supposed to be a microcosm of the US of A.
boston would be best.....Dave would be the trials coordinator
hands down, the best
usatf gets 50k for the bid acceptance
where does that money go to the LDR Community?????
Don't take me wrong. NYC has it's place in American history as the beachhead where most of our ancestors immigrated to from the Old World. But NYC is 50 years past it's prime and nobody wants nor has to live or behave like NYC people do anymore. America has progressed beyond the desperate survival mentality of NYC. Consequently the NYC marathon is an excercise in unnecessary futility. The marathon race itself is fine. The entire experience of Manhattan, being bused to start at Staten Island, the numerous attitudes, endless commentaries and suggestions, and thousands of aggressive chubby middle aged cops, are a total bore to outsiders. Having to pay money to run and experience all that excess NYC crap makes the NYC marathon the worst I've been to by far. NYC simply has no culture and no class to speak of, period.
are you f***ing kidding me, NYC is the best place in the world, maybe not to run a marathon in Central Park, you only wish your city was the same
marathon trials,no... the regular marathon ..a great experience
nyc is the place to be as a gay man, the opera, broadway, the night clubs, fashion week, columbia, nyu etc
maybe this is why we will only bid for those hot, young, american men in short shorts
I am not gay
Texan Gay..you don't like a sweaty ride from 5th ave, sexual........
I'm not gay. I use opposite nick names to bait racists and bigots. I run a hi tech / optical communications company. we have alot of open gays. We have company sponsored social clubs for gays, chess players, runners, go players, etc.
If you enjoy NYC then that's your'e thing. Don't ask the rest of us to support NYC for the marathon OTs.
The basic problems that I have with the NYC proposal is the timing, and to a lesser extent, the course.
Yes, one of my favorite places in the world to run is Central Park, because of the beautiful but challenging 10km loop. I've had some very memorable runs there. However, I think that the course of the Olympics should somewhat mimic the course of the Olympic Trials. NYC is a great place for having the Olympic Trials, but not Central Park.
The major problem with the NYC proposal is the timing. The 5 men who represent the USA at the Osaka World Championships in the marathon will most likely also want to run the Olympic Trials. Having the Olympic Trials 2.5 months later is not a good thing. Also, I think that November 2007 is too early a date before the Olympics. I think that the timing of the 2004 Olympic Trials, in February, was ideal.
I don't have a problem with having the Trials in NYC, but have it in late-February/early-March 2008, and do a loop of Manhattan, starting at Ground Zero, up 1st Ave., up to Columbia University, maybe a stretch through the park, and down to Wall Street again. Since the field is small enough and fast enough, fewer roads would have to be closed down.
Late February in New York is typically below freezing. average low for the month is 28, and you can easily get a day under 20.
That would be a fun course. Any reason why the XC Championship is OK for NYC in February but the Marathon Trial shouldn't be?
I still believe that combining it with the NYC Marathon brings the most attention to the sport, then again, NYC is starving for activity in February. Christo anyone?
Texan Gay (aka Optical Communications Hi-Tech Guru) - I can't agree with you that NYC is irrelevant or that America has progressed past desperate survival mentality. The people on this message board are probably beyond survival mode and in many instances due to the sacrifices made by their immigrant ancestors. You may not like NYC but it's kind of a popular place and a lot goes on here. It's the most interesting place I've ever lived. No culture? How about any culture (or sub-culture) you want to find?
Your criticism of the ING NYC Marathon is 100% warranted. It's a parade not a race. Do it for the experience.
Do you really think anyone knows or cares about the USATF XC trials except those running it? Look at your RW/RT/TFN/New England Runner magazines, do you see an Ad for the event in them?
NO, no, no, no one cares...but you could watch it on ESPN at midnite or the Millrose Games during the Superbowl
So do you think the trials would be different, Lol
L....loser
But USATF will make 50k for each event
I don't care if the standards are relaxed or not. I think on that specific course you have to be concerned that they make the Olympic standard.
The course does not have huge hills but there plenty of gradual climbs throughout the course and doing each climb 5 times will take its toll at :00 - 5:15 pace. Yes they run great times ONCE on this loop but that is ONE time. Its a tough course when you have to repeat it five times not to mention the mental boredom.
Did it suck in Birmingham and St. Louis for the Trials in 2004 or Worlds last year?
It does make it easier for TV to cover. You can have fixed camera locations. Much easier.
Not sure I like the timing of November 2007.

Yeah like Birmingham and St.Louis were for Athens.
