2023 Boston Marathon men's field is out: Mantz, Fauble, Do Nascimento join Kipchoge et al

CJ Albertson will finally has his day as a top American - I wish him that!

He’s more likely to run a 2:10 marathon 3 weeks before Boston, lead the pack going over Heartbreak, then fade to 15th place and get accolades for ‘running hard and going for it!’

We already know Fauble can run 2:08 high on this course if the weather’s good. I’m curious to see what Mantz can do here, and if I had to make bets he’d be my choice for top American.

A super Boston field just got even more super. Tanzania's Gabriel Geay (2:03:00) and Brazil's Daniel Do Nascimento (2:04:51) also join a field that already included Eliud Kipchoge, Evans Chebet, and Benson Kipruto.

The best US entrants won’t even run with the lead pack. (CJ doesn’t count). How excited can you get? At least Rupp would run with the leaders and give it a shot.

Scott Fauble will retire without ever “going for it”. Say he’s happy with his efforts bc he “knows his fitness” or something, talk sh*t about the guys he passed in the last 10k where “the race actually starts” - finish 10th or 11th, and retire with a PB of something totally forgettable just like his personality. It’s like he doesn’t want ppl to root for him. Go open a burrito shop or whatever his thing is.

Mantz will be top American.

Think BAA did a good job here -- they gave the bag to Kipchoge but also went out and got guys who have done well on non-time trial courses. If Kipchoge is human in April, a bunch of guys who know how to run the Newton hills + roll the last 8k could make for a compelling race.

Chebet won Boston/NYC in 2022. Kipruto ran a 14:06 5k from 35k-40k to win Boston in 2021. Desisa has won Boston twice, NYC once, and took gold at Doha in 2019. Kitata beat Kipchoge & won London in 2020 + was 2nd @ NYC this past year. Albert Korir won NYC in 2021. Augustine Choge is also way down the list. Love the flyer on him.

If Kipchoge doesn't run away from everyone, we could see him in a big pack in the last 10k of the race.

We won’t see it. There’s likely going to be no camera footage of the American men finishing or even mid-race.

Agree with the above. After busting their nut for Eliud they didn’t have much left. Overall it’s not that strong of a field.
For the Americans can we stop hyping Ben True. I’d say the most talented is Chelanga but seeing what Simmons’ training did for Korir and Kipchirchir in NY, I’m not hopeful he can put a decent marathon together. I’d like to see Mantz go with the leaders because he’s the only thing we have now on the men’s side of things now that Rupp is being put out to pasture.

This. We used to clamor over "top American" at Boston, NYC, Chicago, London before Hall, Deena, and Meb came on the scene. In retrospect, it's rather pathetic. Mantz has the tools to podium, that's all that should concern general fandom. Scott Fumble, Ben Trulia, TJ Alberts are all nice runners, and they might actually develop a breakthrough performance if they actually trained together, but will once again be relegated to hoping to sneak into the top 10 even in this weak field and most likely will be satisfied with asterisk finishes.

Assuming decent weather and not a meaningful headwind I'll say Mantz goes high 2:07 for top American. Kipchoge could 'chill' to a downhill 62:30 first half, bringing a large group of guys around 63 minutes, Mantz can be near the back of the big group to have people to draft off and carry him through around 63 as well, and then survive decent enough over the second half. Kipchoge not only survives the second half, but negative splits for a 2:04:23. It's a typical 60/61 for Kipchoge to start because there is no pacer, so his downhill 62:30 is him chilling a bit.

When he was still a top runner Salazar said the mistake many Americans made was in "going for it". He thought that (adjusted to today's numbers) a 2:08 guy should go for 2:06-07. 2:12 guy got for 2:10. Definitely not hang with the 2:04 guys.

I’m calling it now: Mantz will beat Kipchoge in this race! Mantz is a strength-based cross country stud who can handle hills very well. Kipchoge has grown accustomed to pancake courses. Those old skinny legs will falter on the hills. Look for Mantz to power past Kipchoge on Heartbreak Hill!!

If (and that's a big if) the weather is good, I think Kipchoge takes down G. Mutai's course record (2:03:01). Can't wait to watch this one!

We can only hope. That would be an incredible feat. But isn't it more likely Do Nascimento will be at the front at Heartbreak?
