Hobby joggers are generally older, slower and can't go as far as a runner
Paid to run = Pro
Not paid to run = Hobby Jogger
About 3 minutes per mile.
Only something a hobby jogger would say lol
Training. Genetics. Desire.
Runner = me or anyone faster than me
hobby jogger= anyone slower than me
Kipchoge, Berhanu, Keflezighi, Ingebrigtsen, Andrews, Hoppel, Mekhissi, Cheptegei, Lagat, Wanjiru (RIP), Keino, Salazar ( i hate this mention), Kempainen, Kiprotich, Gebremeskel, Gebselassie, El Guerrouj, Morceli, Acosta, Tyhurst, Jamin ......basically anyone that can run a 5k sub 15....runner..
All the rest ...é pluribus unum....hobby jogger.
If you've never run sub 15, hobby jogger.
That's it. Final answer.
Unless you earn your income from running 100% you are a hobby jogger.
But that doesn't mean you can't take it seriously.
If one's age-graded race time is less than 70%, most LRers probably would call that hobby-jogging. I think the USATF classifies performance as
90--99% national/intl competitive
80--89% regional/natl competitive
70--79% local/regional competitive
60--69% runner
50--59% slow runner
40--49% jogger
Someone here once said that they defined it as having your easy daily running pace be as fast or faster than a reasonably presumed marathon pace. I always liked that definition.
I have never heard the term hobby jogger used by elites or pros. So it stands to reason it is only used by mediocre runners to make themselves feel better about their abilities by disparaging others that aren't as fast or can no longer run fast with age.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
