Sh*t storm brewing for US Men's Soccer program

What created the situation with Reyna prior to the World Cup camp? I know that he was a future great, early to the Bundesliga, beset with injury woes, and missed much of qualifying. Was there rancor because it was thought he wasn't doing rehab or keeping in shape, and hence, was getting injured or what? At the Cup, they said that they got over their rancor and hence we saw Reyna finally play. It does sound like his mother brought this back up but it could be anyone. Berhalter has to go because he can't coach set plays in the box. The USA had tremendously skilled players but they could do nothing in the box on offense.

If Gio's mom really was the one to bring this up, this feels like the kind of things that happen around high school sports in small towns, when local bigshots have kids on the team. I'm glad I coach XC/track so I don't deal with parents mad over benching/playing time, and times/marks decide who competes in the postseason so those decisions are fully obvious to all. I do not envy my colleagues in other sports, I've heard some insane stories.

Berhalter couldn't coach anything. Netherlands scored the same goal 3 times against USA and he couldn't stop it by using the most basic defensive principles.

He was playing some of the worst players over some of the best players. He should have been fired right after the world cup anyway. He couldn't beat Wales.....and barely beat Iran.

If it's true then he shouldn't be coaching. Doesn't matter that it was 31 years ago or that she forgave him. There are thousands of other good coaches (even better than Berlhalter) that haven't abused women that we can pick.

Berhalter isn't the future and this is a reconciled issue between him and his now wife, so the only real implications to me as a fan are if it was indeed the Reynas being petty that are behind this "blackmail". If that's the case, I could see Reyna being done with the national team and we'd lose one of our most promising young players (which is still better than letting sowing discord go unchecked).

I don't get it. If he admitted that the incident occurred, how is he being blackmailed? If he denied it and someone had some sort of video evidence or something that they threatened to release, then he could easily be blackmailed.

If there was video of something 31 years ago about this it would still be a non-issue.

Blackmail or extortion is probably not the correct way to frame this issue.

"Bitter parent who wants a new coach so her kid can be selected again" is probably more on point.

Berhalter went to high school with Claudio Reyna and their wives were roommates at UNC. Their wives also planned to travel together to Qatar until the blowup.

Sounds like this will go nowhere. And there’s a statute of limitations. Too late - should have filed sooner.

We still need an explanation regarding the superflouous g in Berhalter's first name. It's like guys named Dann or Donn or Matt or Jimm. Is it a silent g? WTF

Wow. Just like my initial feeling that it was some high-school level vendetta! It fits that pattern perfectly knowing its a guy who played alongside the targeted coach in their own playing days. Just like your small town football team drama.

"Exposing" a non incident from 30 years ago because the head coach benched your son because of his (admitted) laziness and half *ssing it in practice.
