US Soccer report on Reynas / Berhalters out. Berhalter can coach again, finds Claudio Reyna "bullying"

This report is so woke. At least Berhalter has received justice

No Reyna should be involved with the USMNT ever. I don't care how good he is, Gio is poison.

I find it sad, "During the Investigation, Mrs. Reyna explained that Mrs. Berhalter was her “best friend for 30 to 40 years."

Mr. Berhalter said he tried to talk to Mrs. Berhalter the next day to apologize, but that Mrs.
Reyna “shut it down.” Mr. Berhalter told us he wrote Mrs. Berhalter an apology note and made
her a music mixtape. He explained that he and Mrs. Berhalter split up for seven months and did
not interact again until the start of the following school year in September 1992. He said Mrs.
Berhalter called him and they got back together.

Mr. Berhalter told us that he self-reported this incident to the Men’s Soccer head coach at
UNC, Elmar Bolowich, and also self-reported this incident to his academic counselor. He then
sought counseling about the incident, and, of his own accord, decided to do community service at a women’s teenage correctional facility in Durham. No one required him to pursue counseling or community service.

Mr. Berhalter identified the Wales match as an inflection point in Mrs. Berhalter’s relationship
with Mrs. Reyna. Before that match, he said, Mrs. Berhalter and Mrs. Reyna spoke on the phone
daily. “They had talked every day for decades. And it ended immediately.” He said in the stands
after the match, surrounded by the other families, “they didn’t speak.”

Berhalter admits he shoved down a woman and kicked her twice while she was on the ground. How can any of you defend this??

He should never coach again. We need to send a message that domestic violence will not be tolerated or forgiven.

Let us not forget how this started, he did something a coach never should do and harshly criticized one of his players publicly instead of talking to that player individually.

So you are of the "you make a mistake and thats the rest of your life" type? This was when he was in college. He was basically still a kid. Even then he knew he made a mistake, and he reported himself for it, and sought counseling. You think he should NEVER be allowed to coach anyone ever, because he got into a violent altercation as a college kid THIRTY ONE YEARS AGO, and immediately sought treatment for his issues?

No one is DEFENDING his actions. They were wrong. He knew it, we know it. But to hold it against him for the rest of his life, when he sought help, admitted his wrongdoing and did everything he could to correct it? What is wrong with you? I sincerely hope you never made any mistakes in your life.

This is not a world most people would want to live in. Beginning at birth, a crucial part of the human experience is making mistakes, learning from them and getting better at being human.

Agree fully, and would add that the victim in the attack has obviously forgiven him and moved on. That’s not a foolproof standard — sometimes we hear family of murder victims say they forgive the killer even as he’s sentenced to a long and deserved prison stretch — but it ought to factor in, balanced against the severity of the offense. Certainly it should factor into any analysis of whether we join in a canceling crusade years after the fact, and should factor into whether a situation is “any of of our business,” such as it were. Especially so when the motivation for even bringing it up was so clearly not any big progressive concern for the well-being of women but petty revenge of a kind more commonly seen in high schools sports than high level international competition. Mrs. Reyna was mad that her kid didn’t play in a game and in seeking her revenge she was counting on exactly the kind of mindless, no-nuance reactionary white-knighting that the other poster wants us to partake in. Nobody should give her the satisfaction of falling into her trap.

Everyone involved is embarrassing.

Berhalter bc he’s a terrible coach and got the job bc of his brother — he has this “golden generation” of soccer stars and has done little with them. Yeah Gold Cup so what? It’s been a down couple of years for Mexico. Both the US and Mexico should be better. Then he gets baited by the Reynas and airs the team’s dirty laundry in public.

The Reynas bc they can’t just let their son’s talent do the talking, gotta be helicopter parents too.

Agreed. Also — the Reynas could have easily just let Berhalter’s mediocre record get him the sack but now bc of their behavior, they have people feeling somewhat sorry for him. Dummies.

Everyone keeps overlooking the part where she hit him in the face to start the incident too. Not saying it warranted the response from Gregg, but all the pearl clutching here is decidedly one sided.

I agree but this wasn't just a random mistake people make during life, it was an act of violence. He should pay a penalty for it and it seems that he has, he also made up for it in his own way and it is no longer a red flag.

please rewrite the thread title. The phrasing of "Berhalters out" makes it seem like Berhalter is out as Coach. Do better
