The 7th and 8th place guys in the Pick region this year would be top 5 in the state in most years... and therefore not qualify. And 5-6 will only get there if it's fast and they land the wildcards.

However, there will be doublers. Most nobody is going to PR.

Looking at results from the districts around the state now
I am curious to see how/when/if Tommy Rice steps it up on the journey to Columbus in June.
He finished 2nd in his district in the 3200m and 3rd in the 1600m. That North Canton district had some pretty good names and seemed to be pretty tight: Rice, Papas brothers, Connor Reed, Eli Ilg, Noah Johnson.
I'll go out in a limb and say the defending state champ in the 32 will be ready. Same thing happened last year - lots of attention on Jerold, Ondracek, Ackley (doubling) - and Rice peaked at the right time.
I could actually see this as well. If Rice doesn't defend his title in Columbus in June, at least he won't get blown out in the process: he would lose by getting outkicked in the final straightaway.
I mentioned the Steele (Amherst) District for the Girls 4x800m. But also, the 3200m (girls) was also very stacked!! 11:13 did not make it out, and 11:17 was 6th! for the 4x800, 9:37 did not make it out!
3200m:
1. Katie Clute Olmsted Falls 10:39.83
2. Sarah Peer Westlake 10:48.73
3. Kaitlyn Reese Avon 11:05.83
4. Julia Richards Westlake 11:13.04
5. Maddie Harrington Avon 11:13.64
6. Brianna Chaves Rocky River 11:17.99
4x800m:
1. Westlake 9:16.28
2. Olmsted Falls 9:28.94
3. Rocky River 9:35.71
4. Avon 9:36.92
5. Steele 9:37.15
6. Magnificat 9:50.61

Unreal. Looks like that region for girls will be similar to the Pickerington region for guys. 11:13 not advancing to Regionals is crazy. Has OHSAA ever considered adding wildcards to the district round? I mean, Trevor Lanoy ran 4:18 last year in the Hilliard district and didn't advance. And several 4:30/40 types did from another district in the same region. Crazy.
I posted this in the Top Ohio xc schools thread and meant to post here.
The 4x800 is one of the most popular events in the state meet and is one of my favorites along with the 4x400. This year it is stacked but there really is a lot of disparity between the regions.
The heat sheets for the regions is posted along with the seed times. I averaged out the seed times and looked at the data a bit to highlight how disparate the regions are.
Wayne’s average seed time for the 16 teams is 8:06.09 with 7 teams being under 8 minutes. Six teams have seed times over 8:10 and one team Piqua, has a seed time of 8:31.95.
Pickerington has an average seed time of 7:56.69 with 12 teams under 8 minutes. Not a single team has a seed time over 8:10 and the slowest seed time, of Orange, is 8:07.19.
Fitch has an average seed time of 8:06.73 with 2 teams under 8:00. Mayfield has the slowest seed time at 8:13.51. There are a lot of teams clustered between 8:02 & 8:10ish.
Steele has an average time of 8:10.29 with 2 teams under 8:00. Ashland has the slowest seed time at 8:28.37. There are 4 teams with seed times over 8:15.
I just can’t ever remember the regions being this uneven with one region being so dominant. It is conceivable that the odd team left out from Pickerington could have a faster time than the fastest time from any of the other regions with the most obvious exception being St X.
I'm not sure why I am posting here when there are four guys near here that are choking. I should probably be do the Heimlich on them. Oh, it's the Kilbourne 4x8 team! 🤣

Also good to see that the Steele regional clocked in fairly respectable times for their boys' 4x800 qualifiers as well.
But the point about the depth of the Pickerington regional still stands (nice analytical work there, OhioTandF!).
Half of the field (8/16) clocked in a sub-8 result; those left-outs in the Pickerington regional would have qualified for state if they had been in the Amherst regional.
Am curious to see what the SW and NE regional results look like.

Just watched the video of that Pickerington regional 4x800. Lancaster really does have something special with their "double anchor".
Wow, they were way back in mid-pack when Taylor got the baton for the third leg. He then catapaults them into first: the hand off to Thress for the final leg. Game set match.
Gabelman had WN in 4th for a hot second in the final straightaway but got outkicked. He had a pretty good effort to bring WN back and get them into that spot.
Ricchiuti looked like he had a strong leg to maintain Dublin Jerry's position. Nice.
And Kilbourne was never really to be found during that whole race. Yikes.
Thress and Taylor to go 1-2 in the open 800m in Columbus in June?

Dropped baton. Not sure that qualifies as choking.

Agree in Lancaster. Taylor should be leading off, if you ask me. Not sure you want to give St X that much room.
WN and Liberty advance through wildcards. Good for them.
And Kilbourne... as stated, a dropped baton by Smith after the 1st exchange costed them all sorts of momentum and space. He had to turn around, go back and get the dropped baton, and continue. They probably wouldn't have advanced anyway, but they never had a a chance after the drop.
