More like qualifying for Boston I guess. Probably a bit harder though just due to the nature of the race and the limited opportunities.
It is probably a bit harder but yeah that is probably a good analogy. Boston is hard for a lot of people. But any college XC team has a half dozen guys who could do it with like a weeks notice... It is a nice accomplishment but we aren't talking about some crazy accomplishment.
I seriously doubt most, if any, college XC teams have a half dozen guys that could qualify for Kona on a week's notice. It takes fairly serious training to qualify. The distances for the swim, bike and run are just too long to fake. Swim and cycling are also highly technical sports.

A lot of people talk crap about how runners could qualify so easily, even with comments like this about "a week's notice."
They are trolls or idiots.
Toss the average college cross country runner in the pool and say, "See you in 2.4 miles," and that will be the end of that for almost all of them. Then try to replicate it in an ocean while being banged and kicked by a throng of other athletes.
