'once in a lifetime talent'... She has a 15:14 5,000m PR... How about we wait and see if she runs significantly faster this year before we start saying she's the best ever and unbeatable. Jenny Simpson has the record of 15:07. And even if Katelyn runs 15:06 to beat the record this year I wouldn't be shocked if another runner comes around in 5-10 years and runs even faster. We literally have multiple Americans recently post collegiate running 14:30's and people keep fussing about Katelyn Tuohy who has a 15:14 PR like 5 years after running 15:37. If she improves 23 seconds in another 5 years she still won't be as good as Monson/Schweitzer and possibly Cranny and a couple others. Valby ran 15:20 last year and is younger than Tuohy, and is improving at a faster rate than Tuohy. She could reasonably run 15:10 this year as a sophomore.
Valby is a sophomore by eligibility only (she redshirted). She and Tuohy graduated HS the same time (class of 2020), both are 3rd years at school, and both are 20 years old.
The pros running 14:30's are pros, and hit those times after school, so not an apples to apples comparison. Tuohy's PRs at 20 compare very well to theirs at the same age.
And - no one would be shocked if in 10-15 years other runners are faster. Isn't that how it is supposed to be???
This is true. I find the following: Kelati 15:15 at age 22. Schweitzer 15:19 at almost 21. Abby D 15:20 at 20 and 15:11 at almost 21. Monson 15:14 at 22. Cranny 15:24 at 22. Valby and Tuohy seem at or ahead of these.
What is the point of such statements--"so and so will never win ..."? I remember when people said Bill Rodgers would never beat Frank Shorter in the marathon, and then he did, many times. I thought the underlying point of sport was that ... you don't know what's going to happen. Why such an urge to say something will or will not happen? One could just as well say that Valby has more untapped potential since she has seen such success despite not having been training intensely for as long as Tuohy has, except that there are so many additional factors. I'd prefer to just see how it plays out.
She’s been second twice in a row to Tuohy, and that will continue at indoor and outdoor Nationals. Even if Tuohy goes pro after this year, there are still young and rising stars on the women’s side like Natalie Cook who will challenge Valby for the win. Just don’t see it.

5 - 10 years? How about 1 year? Does that work for you?
This is the worst take ever. Tuohy is probably a once in a lifetime talent, the best of her generation right now at least. Parker was right there with her last year only running two days a week. You're crazy if you don't think she will get a title at some point.
It is posts like these that have created the animosity against Tuohy. More and more people are enjoying watching her struggle and lose because of these types of posters. "Once in a lifetime?" Ever hear of Kipyego, Favor, Huber, Schweizer, O'Sullivan, D'Agostino, Skieresz, or Valby or WiIey? If Valby runs both the 3K and 5K at indoor nationals, she will have already eclipsed the collegiate accomplishments of Tuohy.
Right now: Valby - 2 NCAA titles (1 XC, 1 outdoor), 1 collegiate indoor record Tuohy - 4 NCAA titles (1 XC, 1 outdoor, 2 indoor), 3 collegiate records
Valby will break Tuohy's indoor 3K record at BU in February and Wiley will break both the 1500 and mile indoor records. Valby will win the 3K/5K double if she chooses to do both.
End of indoor season: Valby - 4 NCAA titles (1 XC, 1 outdoor, 2 indoor), 2 collegiate records Tuohy - 4 NCAA titles (1 XC, 1 outdoor, 2 indoor), 0 collegiate records
Valby is the best runner in the NCAA right now by a significant margin. The way she has run for the past roughly nine months, I would say Tuohy is "in the top 5" in the NCAA. Neither of them is in the same league with Wiley.
Yes. Once in a lifetime would be somebody who is better than anyone for a 20 year period of time. That is a high bar. Few runners have met that definition in the modern era. Bolt was one. Field event athletes have some candidates. Mondo may be an example. Even Crouser has competitors. But Tuohy isn't even the best runner currently.

If you think the 5k times of those women in their early 20's are good, then you are going to be really amazed by 16 year old Elizabeth Leachman - 15:28.

Question is what is Leachman running at 20? 14:45 or 16:00.
