Fun facts:
Tuohy's time of 19:27.7 is the 4th fastest finish in an NCAA championship race of all time.
Crazy that the times were so fast on such a difficult course.

Cook ran the fastest in history by a 19 year old.
Where did you find a list of 6k times by age?
Allie Ostrander actually ran 19:33 on that list as a true freshman in 2015. But, maybe Allie O was only 18 actually. Cook was very impressive today
great for her
anyways katelyn tuohy posted !!
also, love how ON runners are open to saying they love katelyn tuohy 😂😂 and that they are her fanclub
already recruiting? ajhaha
It's not a list of 6k times. There have been many regular 6k races faster, some by athletes on this list. It's a list fastest finishes in an ncaa championship d1 final.
Here you go, from ncaa:
My Garmin showed a 108bpm heart rate for me while I was watching the race, crazy! Probably the most exciting race I can recall ever seeing, and I’ve seen A LOT!
Place changes and notes in bold from my original predictions:
1 (1) Tuohy SO NC State (defeated Chelangat by 12 seconds in a 5k @ Joe Piane)
Undefeated during 2022 season on some of the more difficult courses in the NCAA (ie: Nuttycombe)
This, I believe, is why she’s considered “generational”…. This is just how good she is now: She not only overcame a 12 second deficit in the final 2,200 meter stretch, she EXTENDED that by yet another 3 seconds for the margin of victory. Say what you will, but that essentially means even in a 3k on the track, if you want to win and Tuohy’s in the race, you’d better be 15 seconds ahead at the 800m mark!
2 (2) Valby SO Florida (defeated Chelangat by 8 seconds @ SEC)
Undefeated during 2022 season, ran possibly the fastest ever recorded 6k course in the history of the NCAA @ SEC in 18:25. Flat-fast courses during 2022 season
She lived up to the hype! She did exactly what I thought she’d do, and impressively hung on during those last hills! She is no doubt a force to be reckoned with and is incredibly talented. I put her in the literally amazing category.
NOTE: 3, 4 & 5 could flip-flop in various ways:
3 (3) Chmiel JR NC State (12 seconds behind Tuohy @ ACC)- has been within 5 seconds of Tuohy @ Nuttycombe). Placed ahead of Chelangat due to being closer to Tuohy in a longer and more challenging course.
Chmiel is such an incredibly gritty runner. It’s been fun to see her getting back to form (as awkward as it is) this season and be right where she has earned a right to be. I believe that now Chmiel has earned the respect of the running fan community who maybe didn’t understand before just how good she really is. I think that officially she is the NCAA’s most consistent runner now.
4 (16) Chelangat SR Alabama (12 seconds behind Tuohy in a 5k @ Joe Piane) Chelangat is ahead of McCabe based on the last time they were head-to-head was @ 2021 NCAA’s and Chelangat defeated her
Ran possibly the 2nd fasted ever recorded 6k course in NCAA history at SEC in 18:33
Okay, SERIOUSLY, who would have thought Chelangat would have beaten her own previous course record BUT would only place 16th??? (I didn’t see THAT coming). WOW.
5 (24) McCabe JR West Virginia (2 seconds ahead of Roe @ Big 12)
Undefeated during 2022 season
Complete shocker. No idea what happened. She ran 2 seconds off the old course record, so it’s not like it was a BAD race. I remember I caught possibly 1 glimpse of her early on in the race, and that was it. I’m at a loss for words.
6 (13) Roe SR Oklahoma State (handily showed her teammates who’s leading her team @ Big 12 by being far ahead of them when sprinting w/ McCabe)
She had a GOOD race actually! Her 19:56 beat her own personal best on this course by A LOT (10 seconds!).
7 (151) Jepkirui FR Oklahoma State (6 seconds behind Roe @ Big 12)
Awkward. I literally don’t know what else to say, as I have no idea what happened, but awkward.
8 (19) Kemboi SR Utah Valley (defeated Stearns by 8 seconds @ Mountain Region)
She actually had a great race! 19th and 2 seconds under the previous record! I thought 6 women or so would break the record. It never occurred to me that NINETEEN would, she was that 19th. Amazing.
9 (4) Stearns SO NAU (8 seconds behind Chmiel @ Nutty, 9 seconds behind Roe @ Cowboy)
I believe I’ll be studying up a bit more about this lady’s meteoric rise up the NCAA ranks! We spoke about her as a group a few times this season, but THIS, THIS was amazing!
10 (7) Cook FR Oklahoma State (11 seconds behind Roe @ Big 12)
Coach Dave Smith said from the beginning of the season that anyone of Roe, Cook and Jepkirui could be the #1 on the team. Cook proved today against anything that I personally thought, that SHE is their #1, literally without a shadow of a doubt. Who would have thought she’d beat her teammate ROE by 10 seconds while both of them broke the old course record?
So, overall I picked 5 out of 10 for at least being in the top-10! Haha… 3 in their exact spots (1st, 2nd, 3rd)!
I found myself looking forward to today’s race as if it were Christmas and super excited this morning to watch and witness such amazing running. I can’t imagine I’d ever be able to forget this (I’ve already watched the race again!).

You’re right about Chmiel, I always respected her as a better-than-average grinder, but I may have underrated her quality. A certain flotrack commentator once made a pithy comment re Mantz that might apply to Chmiel as well:
The guy doesn’t look fast. But he’s fast.
I agree that Roe, McCabe and Chelangat didn’t run badly at all. Rather than having a “bad day,” they were straight-up beat by fitter runners who could handle a higher level of pace in race conditions. This trio’s collective performance reminds me of McCabe’s run in the NCAA steeple finals last summer: clocking a time that would’ve won the same race the previous year but getting thoroughly outclassed by two women (Delay & Wayment) who demonstrated that what used to be good enough no longer is. Stearns--a runner many of us placed in the 9--12 range--didn’t perform out of her mind imo, she just raced as expected and met the standard of fitness necessary for top 10 on a day when several favorites couldn’t do the same.
On to indoors (& World XC in Feb!). I'm Looking forward to watching the usual suspects, a particular favorite (refocused and healthy) and hopefully the emerging Olemomoi compete in Boston and beyond.
As for Merber, Tollefson and Anderson? No complaints.

Agree...I have said many times that Chmiel is such an underrated/overlooked runner. She happened to have Tuohy racing her all through HS and now NCAA....and so gets overshadowed. But she is certainly one of the most complete and consistent XC runners out there.
She matched Tuohy on the last split (4.93k - 6k) at 3.22, and separated from the chase pack easily at the end. I did a quick scan, and don't see any other runners within 3 seconds of that. Great race for her.
