When the opinion stated is "the most gifted singer I've ever heard", then some reality needs to be dealt. I suppose maybe the OP hasn't heard many singers. Whitney Houston slayed that song...arranged it that way to make Dolly Parton's song even better. This Lucy person copied Whitney and not as well.
Personally, I prefer Dolly's original version to any of the covers. It's just so much more poignant and heartfelt. Most of the others just feel like performances.
Fair. I find I have a HUGE bias toward whatever the first version of a song I heard. I heard Whitney's version before Dolly's.

Ever hear Linda Ronstadt's?
Yeah, Linda's recording is probably the first time I heard the song, back in the 1970s, and it's lovely. I can't really remember now when I first heard it, but it was long before Whitney sang it. Linda's cover is much closer to the original with its country sound.
Whitney's version was completely rearranged to showcase her immense vocal talent, and it was done brilliantly. But whenever I want to listen to the song I'm always drawn back to Dolly's original (not the one from "Best Little Whorehouse in TX", which I don't particularly care for). The original recording is the one that feels the most authentic to me and really moves me the most.

Linda's is the one David Foster listened to before the idea for Whitney to sing it was presented
being able to sing well is not that rare of a quality. go to 10 churches in the south on any given sunday and you will hear at least 6 people as talented as most people that are professional recording artists.
what they do not have is the personality to be an entertainer and draw a crowd.
With ProTools anyone can be a singer. You can literally just speak words into the microphone and it will come out sounding like you are singing a pop song.
Being a true singer is more of a party trick now than it is necessary for stardom.
I did something a little different this week. We recorded this one after a session at the studio! Hope you like it. P.S. Big shout out to Brandon at Inceptio...
A nervous Lucie takes to the stage with Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You'. And after questioning her ambitious song choice, Simon is blown away by L...
And I completely agree with the post earlier in this thread that it should always be acknowledged that this song was written and first recorded by (the living legend) Ms. Dolly Parton.

I am going to assume you are joking; Dolly herself said Whitney's version was way better.
Is this the most over-played over-hyped song ever? I'd puke if I have listen to yet another female singer over-sing this song just to show off their 'vocal range'.

Dolly did indeed say that. She is correct too. Whitney Houston's version is better than the original.
Now, Dolly Parton is a class act, so it is unclear if she really believes that or not (she probably believes it), but she is a humble person and felt like praising Houston.
