If you are a professional upper middle class type, Portland is a distinctly small time place to make your way in life. There are very few people in any field in the area that are accomplished on a meaningful level. Most of the people that move to ME failed somewhere else first.
enjoy the seven weeks of Summer and five months of Winter.
I moved to Northern New England from Boston a little over 10 years ago for a job and outdoor access. If you're looking for hiking and ski access then New Hampshire north of Concord or Vermont are going to be better options than Portland. Consider the Hanover area, good schools, access to healthcare, professionals, lots of recreation, some culture, incredible biking, skiing relatively close, the AT runs through it (plus White Mtns are a short drive), and youth bike and ski programs are available. It's also a shorter commute to Boston if you need to pop down there.
Portland is definitely more urban/suburban costal, no real hiking and skiing is further than you think.
