My sister's sister-in-law. Her parents are really wealthy and enable her worthless slacker lifestyle (no career, rarely a job, heroin use, repeated trips {vacations} to fancy re-hab, and live-in partner who is a mirror-image). In her 50s now; entitled, arrogant, and absolutely my least-favorite person to be around.
Republican rich kids generally go about their business trying to make something of themselves. They may get into politics later. I'm not saying many democrat rich kids don't do the same but some skip the part about making something of themselves and go straight into politics. Look at me! My qualifications are I am smart and I know how to play the game.
I grew up near a girl who got a brand new mercedes SUV for her 16th birthday. Within a month of having it she wrecked the front. Then her parents got her the BMW SUV instead. True story. Just off the wall.
The only thing worse and also way out there that I can tell you about is when I witnessed two middle school aged children board their parent's private jet in Aspen. Their parents were not with them. You might have to think about this one a few times. Again, true story.
I don't know anyone quite like what you described, but I do know one woman whose father is very wealthy, and he set up a trust fund for her that she got access to at age 35. She went to college, but she has never worked full-time ever and has had large stretches of time of not working at all because even as she was waiting to get to that sizeable trust fund, her parents gave her a lot of money, bought her cars, etc. She has never given specific information on how much money, but through some deciphering, it is clear they helped her out to the tune of anywhere from $50,000-$100,000 per year beginning after college before the trust fund, and the trust fund was worth about $10 million. She has a sister who also has never worked full time and has access to the same amount of money.
Flagpole - you DO know Hunter Biden. He is like the guy described except he lives in Beverly Hills and we pay for his Secret Service protection.
1) Nope. I do not know Hunter Biden.
2) The obsession you Trumpers have with a guy who has never held elected office is insane. Stop being insane, you nutbar.
Yes, a few and the same story. A couple of guys bankrolled by their fathers, not unlimited funds but enough to live on without working.
It's kind of sad really. Two in particular are in their forties now and don't have careers despite very expensive, lengthy educations. Both have "vanity businesses" - businesses that don't make any real profits but enable them to sound busy and to meet women.
Both have cheated on whichever woman is unfortunate enough to be their girlfriend at the time and consequently have reputations for being sleazy. One remains single, the other has married an extremely homely older woman whom I would guess would tolerate the cheating as long as its not in front of her. Both were talented in sports but gave up early. Neither are happy.
How do I know? Both have tried to cheat on their present partners with me, vand the answer was "Eugh, no".
There's also a woman aged 20 who follows the same pattern except she dropped out of education, had a fortune spent on her to do a sport (not athletics) to a level most people do at their own cost then gave it up when she realised she still couldn't win. Now does no sport, has no job, no education and hangs around a local law school boyfriend trying to be the oerfect potential housewife who is obviously going to drop her when he graduates.
Anotger girl like that, now in her thirties and unfortunately the parents have run out of cash so she works in a low paid job having left home for the first time at like 28, again doing the oerfect potential girlfriend thing with a mediocre boyfriend already bored with her.
I would say amused. Not jealous. Most of the time these people are kind of trainwrecks and it’s fascinating. Who would want to be a person who lacks any sort of skill or talent developed by actual effort and just exists to blow through mountains of money?
What you're describing is a NEET - not in education, employment or training. I'm the same as the OP - 34 and unemployed but not from a wealthy family. There's lots of us and we usually have mental health problems. I've been to university twice and have degrees in physics which have proven to be pretty useless in the jobs market. I haven't given up and I'm aiming to retrain but I am simply not wired like others. I am heavily introverted and either have some form of aspergers or heavy brain fog from long term depression. There is no help and my GP even told me so and told me to pay for a private psychiatrist. Physically I am fine and race to a decent level.
I sometimes run with a woman like this. I don’t know a lot about her, but relay what I know. She doesn’t have a real job. She has a job through her fathers company, but she doesn’t do anything. She has a company credit card. Her words “I don’t care how much it is, I just put it on the card.” Goes on vacation multiple times throughout the year for weeks, sometimes months at a time. She has a nice, but modest apartment. Her car is also nice, but nowhere near new. So she probably has an allowance that keeps her comfortable, but she wouldn’t be considered rich. Oh I think the condo is her fathers technically. So no rent I guess. She’s real nice and she’s a talented runner. But she has no concept of the cost of things.
Yeah, a early 40s guy whose daddy made tens of millions suing the airlines after 9/11
Flies around the world on daddy's money and eats at Michelin-starred restaurants all the time.
He was listed as a "partner" on his dad's law firm website for like 5 years despite (probably) never even going to the office. LOL.
He's always working on pathetic "side projects" that never go anywhere. Always boasting about these, and they never come to fruition. Very sad individual.
Can't say for sure but I have some connections on Strava, mostly ultra runners who aren't pro nor of retirement age who seem to have unlimited time and energy for running. Unless running is somehow part of their occupation I can think of no other way this is possible.
Not really but I have met some poor adult kids whose parents fund/enable their lifestyle and I've also met rich adults who do not have a real job but have made a million plus dollars by a young age through either luck or skill. Regarding the former, the parent(s) basically let the adult kid live in their house rent free and the guy is unemployed for a long period and over 30 in age. The kid is not motivated to work because they're lazy and the parent(s) give them enough to live off. Regarding the latter, I know a number of people whove used a talent or skill to accrue lucrative money. I know several youtubers, I know Vegas pro gamblers, I know a few people whove used a business idea or skill to get rich (i would categorize myself there), I know scammers and drug dealers (just because they hang around rich people).
I've lived in an affluent midwest town for close to four years now. In the time I've been here, I've got to know a few people who are wealthy, but this past year I started to get to know a few people around my age (34) who literally do not work and their parents fund their entire existence.
This one guy I met cannot hold a job, he's been to rehab, he has two kids with his wife and does nothing but golf. His dad is a multimillionaire and has paid for his house ($700,000) and it's extensive renovations, private schools for his kids, and gives him a $3,000 allowance for the month.
My wife and I are dumbfounded by the whole thing because we came from nothing and we are far from rich - and we cannot understand why the guy is not motivated to do anything with his life other than feel like he's entitled to his dad's money. He literally has the financial flexibility and time to do a lot of great things and make connections and develop a career, but he just doesn't.
Do any LRers know any adults like this? I want stories. Amuse me.
PS - the guy I mentioned above is in the process of divorce. Of course, his dad is covering all the legal expenses.
My wife's cousin. He's 50 years old. Lives in his parents' basement. Has a car (that they bought for him as he has no money). After bouncing around LA for years working odd jobs (waiting tables, working on cruise ships, selling people on some new aged psychological cult, etc.). Came back home and got on unemployment because he had damaged his brain with drugs (or at least they were able to find some quack that signed the form that said he was incapable of working). Still goes and parties every weekend. Flies out to LA to hang out with friends and do psychadelics at burning man and film festivals. Moves from one get rich scheme to another. Spent a number of years out in LA in some drugged-out California cult. Dispenses life and love advice to people even though he has never been in a meaningful relationship. And is always sure to get out there and promote Democratic candidates and spew how evil Republicans are even as he globe trots around with his parents.
You seemed like a reasonable person posting this until you had to bring up your politics for no reason.

I just always find it ironic when monied individuals (politicians, celebrities, trust fund kids) that have never performed an honest days work are quick to lecture others about things like climate change as they go on exotic vacations in private jets, yachts, etc. multiple times each year.
I never met them, but I know of two notoriously poor spellers who are in their fifties and have never had jobs, lounge around all day watching tv and taking naps.
