The press shy Schumacher talked about being press-shy at the beginning and then presumably talked about a wide variety of things (I haven't watched the video yet).

I do not believe for one minute that Jerry is press shy. I sense that he wants to control the narrative and that he is rather calculating (and even deceptive) if necessary.

Nah he has always said he wants the focus to be on the athletes and lets the athletes speak for themselves. When he is required to talk he talks.

Oh ffs he should have been talking a lot more when our next great hope got a 4 year ban for doping. But his claim that he didn't even know the drug she got busted for tells me you can't trust anything he says anyway....
Or he could tell us why Jager got 5 out of 3 doping stars. And no, that wasn't because he was at altitude.
USADA said he was clean. If you're going to live and die by verdicts (like with SH) then at least show some consistency and follow what USADA said. Not just agree with whatever suits your agenda.

Source? I never heard (or saw) USADA say that.
In an case, it is a difference whether to trust a published process with IRNS + AIU + WA + CAS + SFT all agreeing on Doper SH versus USADA saying something without showing any data.

It's not "press shy" exactly. It's more like "fear of press" and how one might be perceived by one's competitors if quotes come across as "cocky" in a press release, especially about a non championship race. It's more of a lack of trust in journalism and how they may frame the article than it is being shy. He will open up during seasonal endpoints such as USAs, the World Champs and the Olympics.
Jerry comes from a hard knocks era of competitor expectations and etiquette. It would be routine to read the newspaper and think of your competitor as "cocky" -- for even talking to the press in the first place -- so Jerry "let his feet do [most] the talking". Jerry would rather be likable than cocky so to him that means remaining quiet in certain situations . This concept from his youth is so instilled and at the same time he cares so much about his athletes, he is probably nervous about "serving them up on a platter" to the press. So he goes to great lengths to avoid putting targets and 50 press gorillas on their back.
He's just not very intelligent... not a vast vocabulary, your typical "coach" but maybe this will help him become more dynamic in conversation and perhaps help him articulate his thoughts.?
He should take a page out of Gjert Ing. and be as honest, bold, and confident as he has been about his boys. I appreciate that. Only losers interpret things like "cocky" and "arrogant" when in fact it could be "truth" and "reality."
Someone should have asked what kind of education programme he will implement to ensure athletes are aware of their responsibilities with respect to anti-doping rules. Obviously, the NCAA is outside of WADA so anything goes, but he is preparing some of these people to be pro's. You have to think they'd need an outside specialist to come in given his and Shalane's self-professed ignorance of commonly used PEDs.
First question I'd ask is "Have you ever heard of EPO?"
If you like to ask questions like that, you would never be invited to press conferences. If you did ask that question, what response would you be looking for? Insults are not really questions.
