Jerry's press tactics
It's not "press shy" exactly. It's more like "fear of press" and how one might be perceived by one's competitors if quotes come across as "cocky" in a press release, especially about a non championship race. It's more of a lack of trust in journalism and how they may frame the article than it is being shy. He will open up during seasonal endpoints such as USAs, the World Champs and the Olympics.
Jerry comes from a hard knocks era of competitor expectations and etiquette. It would be routine to read the newspaper and think of your competitor as "cocky" -- for even talking to the press in the first place -- so Jerry "let his feet do [most] the talking". Jerry would rather be likable than cocky so to him that means remaining quiet in certain situations . This concept from his youth is so instilled and at the same time he cares so much about his athletes, he is probably nervous about "serving them up on a platter" to the press. So he goes to great lengths to avoid putting targets and 50 press gorillas on their back.
