Heat, humidity, training... etc. etc. whatever it was, this clearly just wasn't the week for them to perform to their potential. Gotta remember it's still August- and them boys train for one race and one race only.
They have the pieces necessary to be a top team in Ohio, admittedly probably not state champions but certainly capable of carrying on the tradition of success. All I'll say is keep sleeping on them boys at your own risk. Them boys dangerous!
After week one, I'm very impressed with Springboro. St. Xavier will bounce back, they're too good not to be in contention. Mas. Jackson, Medina, Solon all look promising. Don't forget about Dub. Coffman and Lancaster. Especially this early, it's so hard to compare across different courses, weather, etc.
Regarding Mason, nobody is ever a lock. It's really hard to win one state title, so much has to go right all season long. Exponentially harder to win two in a row. Don't give them the trophy yet, it will be a long and exciting road to state.
I think Marlington might be the best team in the state thought. I don't care how fast the course is, that was a great performance.
First off, even if Marlington is the best team in OH, they won’t be racing Mason at state since they are in different divisions.
The thing about Mason is that they are at least 8-deep. So they can have 1 guy injured or sick and it won’t hurt them much. That gives them an advantage that 5-deep teams don’t have.

Marlington is certainly good, but Kilbourne probably has a better 1-2-3, and they've been beaten by other teams in D1 because of their 4-5. The same would likely happen to Marlington - this year at least. Their depth isn't quite the same as last year.

Maybe Mason, Marlington, and St. X will all race against each other at the Midwest NXN in Terre Haute. It's not a true gauge though after a long season and just after a grueling schedule of district, regional, and state.
In 2019 a lot of people thought that D2 Woodridge was the best team in the state. They did go against St. X at MW NXN. Both did relatively well against some of the best teams in the Midwest that had a little more rest than they did and only about 20 points separated them. It would have been great if they went against each other in the regular season just like it would be nice to see Marlington go against some of the bigger schools in the regular season.
Anyone know when Mason is finally gonna race their varsity?
I heard they're sitting out until the state meet. :)
My guess is if they don't run this weekend they'll run at their home meet in two weeks. And while there have been some good performances from some teams I don't see anyone beating them unless they get hit with the injury bug.
Mason ran the full varsity at Loveland. Maybe this happens again this year

I believed Woodridge was better than St. X. Partially out of bias…I love the idea of D2 Woodridge beating the expensive private school with a massive enrollment.

I'm pretty confident saying Mason has the best team in the state, Marlington is good but Mason should be on another level. They don't need a lot to go right, they just need a lot to not go wrong.

Yeah I think it will be more of a challenge to make the top 7 at mason and stay there than to win d1 state

This doesn’t make any sense. The winner of the state meet will have beaten everyone. Mason’s 7th man has at 6 guys better than him from his own school. What?

Can’t forget Tol st Francis. They beat Mas Jackson in the first race.
I feel like for the other spots behind Mason, it is a toss up.
My top 5 for d1 for now based on the meets we just had: 1. Mason. Defending champs that are very deep and only lost 2 guys 2. Springboro. Got 14th last year but undefeated so far this year. Beat a bunch of top ranked teams. 3. St. Xavier. Almost beat Springboro at the first meet. 4. Tol de Francis. Beat Mas. Jackson in the first meet. 16:24 average 5. Mas. Jackson. Got 7th last year and brought back almost everyone and still very young team that could go for a title next year. Good opening for them. 16:24 average just like Tol de francis.
