Actually, no sport they major networks cover is taken seriously as a sport.
It's just that in the "major" sports they stop playing (ok, in baseball they get to stop and warm up every 3 outs.
Track doesn't stop. But, seriously, when they went to those multiple commercial breaks I thought- what idiot made this decision. And I was so mad that I don't even remember what products they were advertising.
No commercial interruptions here at Hayward Field. All action, all the time. Evening session should be pretty great and I'll check out the festival on the riverfront tonight. Early turn-in this evening since the marathon goes off at 6:15 AM. Great vibes here in the 146th largest city in America!
The maddening part of the commercial break was that we missed a crucial part of the race, but then they did the typical nonsense of showing the competitors walking around hugging people and celebrating. That would have been the time for a commercial break.
I taped the race on NBC. I watched the replay on Peacock and the stream broke for commercial also for the same critical race duration. Peacock live is the answer along with better decision making at NBC.
Yes, and it was hilarious reading the closed captioning on the Kenyan YouTube link. Words like "Santa" or "syphilis" would pop up along with a lot of other non sequiturs.
I got tired of it so I watched it on Peacock with no commercials during the race, nice to have that option despite the cost.
I only have Peacock (no NBC live access) but just over half way through the race my Peacock feed switched automatically to the NBC feed, and I had to suffer through all the NBC commercials.

Watch the world feed, not the nbc feed on peacock. The world feed had 4 hours of uninterrupted footage this morning, including several hours that the NBC feed didn't show.
Peacock is $5 a month. How does any serious track fan not subscribe to this?
Is there a way to record stuff on Peacock? I don't think so. I don't watch sports live anymore due to all the commercials. I'll tape an American football game and start watching about an hour or hour into it and I'll be caught up in the 4th quarter to watch the last few minutes live.
If it's possible to record on Peacock, let me know. Maybe there's a button somewhere I'm missing.
The took a short commericial with 10 minutes left in race (1.5 minute commercial).
OK not too bad if you have too.
Then they went to a LONGER commercial with 3.5 minutes left in race. (2 minute commercial).
Our sport is not taken seriously as a sport.

My thoughts exactly. The reason track isn’t popular in the US is that it’s not broadcast-friendly (i.e. doesn’t stop long enough for beer and pharmaceutical commercials). If the media outlets wanted it to be popular, they’d dedicate the resources to advertising it. A foot race isn’t much different than a car race, but since you can’t make much off ads (without ruining the broadcast), media ignores it. Same for football/soccer. No stoppage time. Footballs is the most popular sport in the rest of the world and no one cares about here. That’s intentional.

VERY unscientific poll, but I DO think it's somewhat close to reality:
I teach, the day after the Super Bowl I polled my classes. All freshmen (15 years old).
97 kids there that day:
Who watched the Super Bowl? 94
Who cared about the game? 8
Who knows who played? About 85
I was invited to a party and the rule was- you CANNOT pay attention when the game is on, you can only watch the commercials and the party ends when half time ends.
