You are correct. No they don't. But the runners who made large improvements from high shool to college seem likely to improve more later while the ones who improve little, make less improvements later. Tuohy is on the lower end of making improvements. Some will point out Cranny but she is one person. There are dozens of women to look at.
I think you guys are forgetting that she was the best cross country high School runner ever
And that her real amazing ability was in Cross country even though she was also one of the top runners ever on the track
I guess what I'm saying is, there were runners who were naturally faster than her at the mile but there was really no one close to her in Cross country for a similar long stretch of time... I think ultimately she'll have a more outstanding college career by focusing on the 5K and cross country and running some 1500s and three k's as well... I guess what I'm saying is there's more upside in college because she can win cross-country and cross country is a big deal!
If she just trained for the 1500 it would be hard for her to also then win cross-country and there would just be less titles available! Let's see how she does this cross country season and then into next track season and that'll probably show whether 5K is a better college fit at least
What do believe is the difference in training between the 1500m/mile and the 5000m? El Guerrouj won Gold Medals at the 1500m and 5000m in 2004 and Moorcroft ran his 13:00 WR 10 days after running his lifetime mile PR of 3:49.
Well cross country is a 6K, and if it's a tough course that probably equates to around 8K on the track!
So I'm just saying I think she's better off in college focusing on cross country and then the 5K and maybe looking to double with some of the shorter distances! I guess my point is making the 5K your main distance on the track will keep you sharper for winning cross country titles
But if she really trained for her main event to be the 1500 then she might possibly not be as good at Cross country! I'm just saying I don't think looking to be a mile specialist during track season would give her the best college career possible! The 5K 3K indoor double is a much better fit because you don't have to run any heats, and then outdoors she could always try the 5K 1500 double

You didn’t explain the difference in training between the distances. It’s very important for 1500/5000m runners to build strength to take on the 800/1500m guys. Walker and Scott knew they they were never going to out kick the Brits so they put in the mileage, ran tempos and longer intervals. Walker said he never did a workout of primarily of 200s, 300s or 400s. As I posted before, there have been elite athletes that could run both distances extremely well off of the same training.
As for Touhy, I believe she is closer to being a 5/10 runner than 1500/5000m.

Well the point of the thread was asking is she training for the wrong distance and I was pointing out the obvious fact that I think she's training for the best college career she can have which includes a lot for cross country
But if she really wanted to maximize her 1500 m time she would do a lot more speed work and a lot less distance work and train differently in the gym and all that would give her a faster 1500 meter time but probably mean that she's not winning cross country
So there's a big difference in the amount of mileage and the amount of speed work you do
And yes she could occasionally step up and run a fast 5k but it would be tough to win at a 6K cross country...
Anyway like I said I think the main point is she's training for the best college career possible right now
You are correct. She can win a XC title. She can win some 5k titles. She could possibly win a 1500 title but doesn't need to train differenty. Training for 800/1500 would hurt her XC chances and she wouldn't be competitive at 800. There are several high schoolers who could beat her.

She’s not a 800/1500m runner and will never will train like one. However, becoming a 400/800m runner and training like Flatt might be doable.
