There is a high probability the Russian government planted or lied about the content of those cartridges. Look at the length of detention before her trial, for a supposedly minor weed oil bust. A quick search suggests her yearly WNBA salary was over $200,000. I understand maximizing your earnings, which she did by playing for a Russian team in the WNBA offseason for about $1 million a year, but $200,000 a year is not yet "inhospitable" no matter what field you're in. Don't be overdramatic here: she could have lived on Easy Street with her WNBA money, but she played in Russia as well to live on Even-Easier Street. Again, I don't blame her, but it's not like she was scraping the bottom of the barrel and just had to go to Russia to survive.

Relatively poorly? Well relative is the correct word. The season lasts from May through late August, mid September for the finalists. The minimum salary is $58,000, not high by NBA standards but they're not paupers. Many players endorse products, have speaking engagements etc...
You are correct about the sentence and the monetary fine but you forgot to mention that sentencing Griner gives the legal authorities the right to authorize a prisoner swap which would enable Griner to return to the United States in the not too distant future. I think the chances are very good that a prisoner swap will be implemented within a few weeks or months at worst. This will also save face for everyone concerned including President Putin. Cynics will argue that President Putin does not care about “saving face” but at the end of the day it will be win-win for Russia and the USA if this prisoner swap takes place and it must and probably will. There is no chance that Griner will spend nine years in aRussian jail - no way.

You really think taking a knee deserves 9 years in a Russian prison? Just because it is a law doesn't make it right or moral. Deserters from North Korea, if caught, are executed or sentenced to a death camp, along with family members. You fully support this, just because it is the law?
