Nico had the second fastest last lap of the field. I think his kick is coming along nicely. He’s like Rupp, he has to work on the kick, but he can do that and his aerobic engine will put him in position to win. Nico is also 19 and a true soph - the two guys that beat him are 7th and 6th years respectively.
Jeez, I knew this name sounded familiar. This guy graduated highschool the year after me and is still competing. I’m 26 and feel like an absolute old man, or at the very least, extremely removed from college.
I’m sure a good chunk of these guys are the ones whose mommies kept them out a year of school so they could grow more than their peers. Do people have no moral compass? In what world should a 25 year old still be competing in NCAA? Idgaf how injured you were.
Disappointed, it was Basten's day to come in and take over the show on those last 200m, it was his kind of race. Just seemed to give up those last 100m. I'm calling it, he will be NCAA 1500m champion next year.
The age thing is a tricky thing to debate from both sides because I can see the logic on both sides wanting to defend their position. From your perspective you’re right and the older athletes should have an advantage but from the other side basically everyone over the age of 18 is considered an adult and so that is already ipso facto a level playing field in the sense that they are all adults. If we take this logic further should we gripe about Asian-American kids getting more tutoring in mathematics and STEM subjects throughout their school years which give them advantage to enter the medical field and other STEM fields? Curiously, in soccer at least in the Premier league and other major leagues in Europe the younger you are, the bigger advantage you have in attracting clubs and getting massive pay rises. In those leagues once you hit your mid to late 20s you become much less attractive for the clubs and you’re often sold to lesser clubs in status.

Do people have no common sense. The NCAA championships are NOT an age grade championships lol. Just because YOU feel old and out of college doesn't mean someone else has to confirm to your college standards.

we have enough common sense to know that age plays a role in the level of maturity, experience, power and just running in general, theres a reason why most champions are seniors

I agree while they have an advantage, there is no moral issue. The rules are the rules. If enough people decide they think the rules are not right, they will change but until then.....

It's amazing how completely unrelated your 3 comparisons are to each other

I mean if you want NCAA competition to lose all meaning and semblance of collegiate competition then yeah, sure, let the old men compete. But lifetime mileage and training is a thing, and there’s a reason why these 25/26 year olds are placing 1-2 at NCAAs. There’s a thing called tradition and you don’t need a huge brain to realize that mf 7th year seniors shouldn’t be here for it.

So if someone is working on their masters or their doctorate, they can't be part of a track team and compete for their university?

It's definitely an advantage I agree but everyone can do it. Your 5 year d1 clock starts once you go fulltime. No one is forcing kids to go to college at 17.

Go run a road race.
There's are millions of people aged 25-26 in college. Just do a quick Google search and enlighten yourself.
A third of all college students or 37% of all people in college are older than 25. So college isn't something exclusive to 17-22 year olds. Otherwise it would be called the 22 and under championships.

Imagine the lawsuits if the NCAA said only people aged 17-22 could compete athletically. Some people have different life circumstances that don't even allow them to immediately enter college.

Why do you so badly want people to lose eligibility simply for getting injured or being in college during a global pandemic? Anyone can redshirt or start college later if they want. This is the NCAA, there aren’t age groups awards and participation trophies. Deal with it snowflake.

Cap the NCAA at 23 and if these guys really want to race then run big meets unattached or race people their own age on the roads. Nobody is depriving them of an education (what college is for), and it’s not like there aren’t plenty of opportunities to race somewhere other than in the NCAA. Insisting upon competing against athletes with 6-7 years less training under the belt is the only issue here.
Also, pretty sure the idea of “Oh no, I got hurt and trained on the Alter G for 3 extra years while taking the minimum allowed credits per semester! Please let me compete against the 18 year olds still!” is far more snowflake-ian than moving on with your life and competing with peers of similar experience. Like are you serious? Who can’t drop significant time off their 5k with 3 extra years in the college system?
