You know which time Gidey has run at the same place?
But yes, I expected her to slow down more and finish well over 30:40.
Congrats to her for this performance.
Eilish is strong as heck. If you can hang with Obiri, you can hold onto a 35-second lead in a 10,000m race.
So much for the Gidey can't kick narrative ~ she runs a 61.1 last lap (30.8/30.3) and beats Taye (fresh off a 14:12.98 5,000) convincingly. Like Cheptegei it's more like you can't kick off a blistering pace you yourself are setting.
In 4th was Margaret Kipkemboi (KEN) silver medalist in Doha who now looks like a medal contender once again after finishing 4th at Kenyan Trials in 2021. Wonder what would've happened if she'd tried to run with Eilish?
Also other thought is I'm happy to see that Tsegay isn't wasting her time running the 10,000. She clearly has the goods at 1,500 and 5,000. Yes, Kipyegon may be unbeatable but run your best events.
Dieter Baumann’s daughter pacing the 800m. Kipyegon in 2:00 in unpleasant conditions
She did a nice job, though she's gotta get off the line better to get through ahead of the fast starters in 28-flat or 27-high so it doesn't bunch like it did. 58-mid was ideal however and going to 550 is always nice for an 800 pacemaker.
Speaking of getting of the line:
If the designated, paid rabbit false started in a mid distance race do you think they'd call it back and DQ the pacer?

honestly not a bad result for Ayana. Obviously not in the same form as 2016 and 2017 where she ran 29:17, but her lone other result since then has been a 3k barely under 9. To come back after five years and be 4 seconds off Gidey and Taye is impressive. No longer a medal contender but might still pick up a couple solid results on the Diamond League.
Makes me happy to see her racing again! She was nearly a second off qualifying for the national team too. Crazy how even super impressive runners like Gemechu and Yehualaw didn't qualify either... what a tough team to make.

Maybe, but remember there are no diamond league 10000m races. I don't see her results getting any better at a lower distance.
Ayana aside...
Taye v Gidey is looking very tight. Indeed. A healthy Hassan takes them both in Eugene but how healthy is she?
I ask this question quietly - is Eilish a medal threat? Those conditions were not ideal. 17 Celsius, rain, 25kmh wind, and led the last 9700m of it. Surely, a cool, still evening with pacers she would have smashed Paula's record and gone sub 30? That was like the Cranny performance from March but taken up an extra gear or two.

Well, the problem is there are a lot of good athletes to beat and she doesn't have much of a kick. Gidey gets downgraded for hers, but she closed in 61 here and she can probably drop Eilish if she takes it from 1600 our of whatever. Niyonsaba I assume will run the 10, and be very hard to beat. Taye obviously will be. Kipkemboi ran great today too, and will be there for Kenya. Assuming Obiri will be too. Eilish will need some off days or a better finish than we've seen from here. It also could be very hot, though she might be good in hot conditions.
Yohan Blake 10.11 (-0.3) in suboptimal conditions. Not a medal contender any more, but I don't see why he should stop competing and picking up paychecks.
Just watched the vid quickly, but top-to-bottom it looked like a fantastically-executed 100m from Flake, IMO by far his best in recent memory. It augurs well for Eugene, he should make semi’s for sure if healthy, and has an outside shot at making the final.
Too bad conditions sucked, this could have been another sub-10 from him. That’s good news for the JAM relay, which he’s sure to be on.

It would take a lot to go her way for Eilish to be a medal threat in Eugene. She's a grinder and would be done in a kick by too many people. I think she can at least be a factor in the race. I'm more bullish about her chances in the marathon long-term
