In a mega loaded field Sahlman runs his last lap in 60+. Tonight Martin ran straight to the front and, when the rabbits dropped, took the lead and ran to win finishing in 58.36. Outkicked by some elites who seemed to lack courage
Except that NOBODY in that field had any guts except Martin. He chose to lead because he's a stud and a competitor. Martin was the only pro in that race.
Your assertion is ridiculous. Intelligence matters. Have you ever run a race? Gary Martin is on their level. They were all running for themselves. Nothing to do with guts. Surely you can grasp this?
Yes, I have run many races. I can also grasp that you are clueless.
If I remember correctly he was a Junior, but he graduated as a Junior and was actually 18 or 19 at the time...he was only "technically" a Junior because of immigration inconsistencies. He ran 3:59 in his last year of high school (I believe).

Watching Burns get swarmed by his teammates was amazing. I guess he's only a junior? Someone will surely post his exact age not too long from now.
It would be nice to see a list of all the high school sub 4 times, with the athlete's ages listed, as well as their high school year. Please chime in if such a list already exists somewhere.

He may have the JR class record, but he was 18 in that year. Ryun was 17 in 1964 and I think still holds the age group record. Ryun also ran 3:39.0 for 1500 in '64
I’m a fan of both Martin and Sahlman, but I think Colin is a bit faster because he has a better 800m PB.
Their last mile races couldn’t have been more different. Colin ran from the back while Martin ran from the front. Surprising to me, Colin didn’t close well.
those who predicted sub 3:56 maybe don’t understand how significant each second is in a fast mile.

Can we please stop perpetuating the falsehood that he was 19 when he ran that time. It was June 2011. He was 18 + 5 months. It was his last year of high school and he was the age of a normal senior.

You lack intelligence. This race was not specifically set up for Gary Martin. Please educate yourself. The runners owed Martin NOTHING. This is no charity. Please get a grasp on reality.
Stop posting, the whole board knows you're uninformed.

When he broke 4 as a junior he was 18. He graduated in three years in 2011, when he was 18.

I don't care whether he was classified as a junior or not. I'm merely responding to the suggestion that he was 19 when he ran that time, which he wasn't.

So somebody down-voted my post. Ahhh, poor baby. SO HOW OLD IS BURNS?!?
Verzbicas was a year old for his grade so he re-classified. He graduated around the time of that 3:59.71. He was born January 6, 1993 and ran that time on June 11, 2011. He was 18 and 5 months. It was a week earlier that he ran the fabulous 8:29.46. He entered the University of Oregon in the Fall of 2011, and ran 24:35 to finish 62nd and then ran 23:55 to finish 23rd at Pac-12s. (He was out of running shape a bit from training to win World juniors in triathlon in August of 2011, and Vin shouldn't have had him run xc that season when he was out of shape a bit because he had already always shuttled back and forth between sports when he had a disappointing performance). So, Verzbicas was a senior when he ran 3:59.71. He'd already finished high school.
