It's not only about running somewhat fast time. It's also about racing and Drew has not managed a significant win or placement in some time.
I love a good success story and wish Drew nothing but the best but I just don't see it.
I think a poor club choice and the lack of speedy teammates hurts him also.
Cole Hocker trains with Cooper Teare. Rupp trained with Farah. Fisher trains with MO.
Hunter?
My post noted he won the US 5k road championship six months ago.
Beating some notable runners.
That's not a win?
Or you think it not significant?
Six months ago is a long time?
How about his 5th place, 2 secs behind the winner in the US 3k indoor champs 3 months ago?
Not an important race?
Too long ago?
No one takes the US 5k road Champs seriously. Let's be honest. He didn't beat any top notch guys that did well at the Olympics that I can recall. 5th at US indoors is OK but again not super impressive because all the good guys either aren't racing or are not in top form yet. He's got a few weeks but he's getting blown out by his teammates and no reports of injuries or anything. I'm not seeing him close to making the worlds team.

I see.
That championship does not count.
The men’s field featured a pair of Olympic medalists in Paul Chelimo and Matthew Centrowitz. No top notch guys in that race.
They were way past their peaks for the Olympics. No one cares how they did at road champs. Now, if Hunter comes back and throws down at Pre, that's something to talk about. Spoiler alert: it's not gonna happen.
So the US 5k road champs is not an important race.
And Centro and Chelimo ran in it but were not in shape.
Got it
Its literally not an important race, idk why you are so defensive about it. Chelimo finished 16th in this race, are you really gonna argue he was in good shape? Him and Centro probably got a payday to come race and took it.
And when Hunter finished within 2.5 secs of Cole Hocker at the US 3k indoor champs 3 months ago? Beating Willy Fink and finishing 1 place and less than 0.5 secs behind Connor Mantz (who was coming off an NCAA X-C win).

Hocker not in shape? Mantz not in shape?
3k champs not a serious race?
3 months is a long time ago?
Relax Joan. Cole put 2.5 seconds on Hunter in the final 200m and Mantz is maybe the 10th best US 5,000 runner. Also bragging about beating Willy Fink? Seriously?

You are way to concerned about about national championships. They don't matter a bit. Who cares about that? Who cares about the second in the US champs, its as important as the second in the british, french or norwegian championship. Is as important at "NCAA X-C". All those are championships that are by definition void of the best competitors in the world. Its such a low bar to set.

Its so hilarious to read these posts as a foreigner. Enormously hyped runners that (almost?) never has been at an international meet, getting cred for beating even more obscure runners. No offence to Willy Fink, for all I know he might become a world class runner in 5-10 years, but right now no world class runner would be happy about beating Willy Fink.
Why are we even talking about these people? For every Paul Chelimo, Molly Seidel and Grant Fisher thread there is 100 threads about some guy who ran a good race against some high schoolers, documented by his dad filming it with his mobile phone. People here are addicted to the prospect of future results so much that they don't care about those actually deliver world class performances.

I'm sure Grant Fisher can't sleep at night right now. His 5k and 10k ARs mean absolutely nothing to him. His only regret is that Drew Hunter won 5k road champs. That haunts him to this day.
So the US 5k road champs is not important and the name runners Hunter beat were out of shape and the rest of the field was not good.
The indoor 3k champs also unimportant and the 2 time NCAA XC champ is a bum. Ditto Will Fink.
Yes, these championships is not important as this is a world championship year and NO ONE from the worlds 10? 20? best 5k road runners, 3k indoor runners or XC runners participated in them. At the world stage they are as important as a turkey trot. Sorry, that is the reality. They are so unimportant that they hold the lowest priority for Americas best runners, who fortunately have real competition to look forward to. No-one remembers a "indoor 3k champ" or "2 time NCAA XC champ", everyone remembers olympic gold medalist. Seriously. Being NCAA XC champ wouldn't guarantee you to be the 100th best at a random local race in Kenya. (which for sure wouldn't even be given its own thread in here)
Raise the bar a little bit. Let these boys and girls build up their career and bloom into the international stage before hailing them as legends. Let Chelimo and Fisher bear the burden of that, so Hunter, Hocker, Mantz, Engels etc can focus on breaking through.

Yeah the US 5K road champs is irrelevant, not sure why this is a discussion. And getting outkicked by the NCAA XC champ coming off a half marathon at 3K is not the flex you think it is.

Grant Fisher is currently faster than every other American runner.
So that means Hunter is done?
huh?
Do all other American runners stink because Fisher is so good?
" He won the USATF road 5k champs in 2021 six months ago. Beat some decent runners.

" 2. Matthew Centrowitz 13:53 3. Sydney Gidabuday 13:53 4. Graham Crawford 13:54 5. Eric Avila 13:55 6. Brian Barraza 13:56 7. Andrew Jordan 13:56 8. Joe Berriatua 13:56 9. Abbabiya Simbassa 13:58 10. Kasey Knevelbaard 14:00

Yes they are decent, but not much more. As ingebrigtsen said: "13:10 is nothing in the big picture, you need to keep improving"
Hocker will be 21 in three weeks. He is about 2 years older, than Kessler, actually, 21 months..I would wait until then(Kessler at 21) to hit the panic buttons....for those who have this insane idea that going to college would be better? Not sure what to tell you..in this sport you take the appropriate deal when it comes to you. One injury on your resume? Bye bye deals. At least this kind of deal.
