What I am wondering is why he was pressing that hard in a race that would not result in the time he was looking for. Before 800, that mark was over, no? Just the ultimate competitor?
Not sure how a 5000m is better for a hamstring strain. Do they expect Nuguse not to kick and/or reach 1500m pace? In my experience, a 5000m does more damage than a 1500m.
Some tough luck, lots of muscular issues: I wonder what their strength/gym work looks like? That's where I'd start... doing some poor form weight work probably leading to an imbalance in pelvis, leading to big muscle group strains (hamstring, quad).
Anyone that has watched Yared closely since the Olympics know that he is done. He is a poor investment. I predict that the smart companies will not sign Yared and that he signs with a smaller company and we never hear from him again.
did you read the interview? Apparently not. He's entered in the 5000 over the 1500 because the 5000 is the farther away time-wise by several days so there's more of a chance for Nuguse to recover and be ready to go.
If he wanted to get the 1500 standard, he would have ran at a meet last week where his marks counted, instead of Sound Running. Would be shocked if he tries to run an additional 1500 the day after conferences.
Jonathan Gault talked to coach Carlson. It's just bad luck. He strained his hamstring a tiny bit last week and they want him 100% healthy. The 5000 gives him more time. I get why the NCAA doesn't want one-off qualifiers but man o man, can we have some sort of exception for Olympians.
Yeah, the disservice of taking a walk-on to the Olympics? Carlson has handled him with kid gloves and done everything possible to keep him healthy. 1) Pulled out of Olympics 2) Only ran DMR at ACC indoors.
I guess if you want to criticize them for not going pro after last year you can do that but if you think you aren't getting what you are worth and you are loving college running, why not come back?
Teams pay on potential. The potential is still there. Nick Willis got paid plenty despite not running the 1500 at NCAAs his senior year.
Now try to explain Voelz going from 6th in the Olympic Trials final (1:45) to DFL in an ACC prelim (1:55).
Pretty easy to explain if you watched the meet. He was tripped and fell when he was in the lead with 150m to go. Not sure why he wasn’t advanced to the final
Notre Dame did this with Molly Seidel 5-6 years ago. No, my point is not that Molly’s pro career turned out well while she figured out her injuries her last year there.
Sparks did the same thing to Molly what Carlson did to Yared.
Carlson thinks he’s Schumacher. Held your guy out of the Olympics to save him for a lackluster XC season and zero NCAA titles. NCAA 3k record was good but at this rate it’ll be broken in a year or two.

Alright then explain how he went from 6th at the Olympic Trials to not being able to individually qualify for NCAA indoors and only has the 23rd ranked time in the East region right now.
Never could put it all together when it mattered it seems. Showed the talent and promise to be one of the best ever but ends with only one individial national championship (1500m- 2019) and one relay national championship (dmr- 2019).
Pretty dissapointing after the flashes he showed and the times he ran.

That's a pretty cynical reading. 2019 he did some great things. He ran well on a team that finished runner-up in XC in 2021. Outdoors in 2021, he pushed a guy who finished 6th in the world all the way to the finish in one of the great NCAA 1500m races of all time (maybe the best ever in terms of the quality of the top 2). He broke 3:35 solo ahead of that and set a collegiate record, and this year a 7:38i to break a long-standing record. Yes this year went south, but he put it together brilliantly in 2019 and 2021 when it mattered.

You are proving my point. He ran the collegiate record times to be one of the best and only won one individual championship. Pretty lackluster.

Again, a cynical way of looking at things. He won that DMR vs. Grant Fisher and Stanford, it was on him. He lost an indoor season due to COVID. And then he ran into a generational talent in Hocker and smoked guys like Garcia-Romo et al. Do you think if Mario wins at a watered-down NCAAs (compared to last year) because he has 2 titles that means he's a more accomplished NCAA runner than Nuguse? No, I'd disagree with that completely.

You don't have control over your competition, which is why we look at times and performances and put them in context. Nuguse's win over Fisher was pretty special in the moment. The race vs. Hocker was one of the finest we've ever seen from a final lap and final 800 perspective. Do you really think Chad Noelle or Miles Batty are deserving of more props because they won NCAA titles vs. really weak fields?

Exactly. Times change, technology changes, condition changes. But competition remains the same.
Nguse was never able to show up to the championship and consistently win. The only goal of this sport is to win, everything else is secondary.
