It's an unfortunate situation with how it played out at Sound Running. With a hamstring injury, Sound Running turning into a jogfest with a kick was going to be a huge risk for him if his hamstring was balky at all. Like Ben Flanagan at Penn, sometimes you might have to take the race into your own hands. Maybe being the one to go with the pacer and not put himself into a position where he and everyone else was kicking in 26 the last 200 would've been the move in retrospect. As the race played out, it was not a good situation for anyone dealing with a hamstring injury and maybe wanting to avoid an all-out sprint.
I would argue Carlson hasn’t done everything to keep Nuguse healthy. He got hurt right before the Olympics last year and had to pull-out. He got hurt indoors (I can’t remember if he got hurt because of the fall at ACCs or if the injury was unrelated). He’s now hurt again. He probably should have gone pro after last year’s outdoor season or at least after cross in the fall. His value likely went down from this year.
WOW, as my god, as this is an AMAZING SHOCKER. As I was saying to my friend as she agrees with me.
Wow, as I read this as I nearly fell out of my chair! As the last time I nearly fell out of my chair when Radical Left Supreme Court leek! As I was SHOCKED.
He'll get the Regional standard at ACCs. He ran an NCAA record there last year solo, why wouldn't he be able to get the regional mark?
More important things to worry about, Rojo.
He'll need to run a low 13:50's to qualify for regionals. It wouldn't be shocking if he just misses it. Weather could be weird, or the race could play out weird, or he may just not have it that day. Morgan McDonald while at Wisconsin waited all season until Big Ten Championships to run a 5k, and he failed to hit a time only running near 14:10 for the win on a not great weather day. Morgan ran the commonwealth games and ran a very fast time, but it didn't count and he did not run fast at Big Ten Championships. This was the same year he ran at world championships for Australia. There are no guarantees it will happen at the conference meet.
This honestly just sounds like poor planning by the coaching staff? Clearly he was coming back from injury from Indoors, so he only had minimal opportunities to race. So why did they go to Sound Running where his marks wouldnt count and then bank on the ACC 1500 a week later?
He could have run his 3:39 at a real race last week and then gotten two weeks untill Regionals to recover. If hes still hurt and needed to bail then so be it, but he never even gave himself a shot.

Weather forecast is rain Friday/Saturday and possible Thunderstorms......

They thought that it was a race set up to nab a Worlds qualifier. It was paced as such, but the top dogs were all foreign guys who either have the qualifier/world ranking or couldn’t care less about the time. So they just let the pacer go. They and the Sound Running organizers obviously misjudged it, which had the side effect of making Teare/Hocker look smart in Oregon.
His best event is 2000m - 3000m, 5000m is the logical focus at the world level.
If he was hurt or training to sidestep disaster most of this season, just way easier to condition him for 5000m as no spikes needed, basically ever, no pointless racing.
So sorry for this kid. He missed his Olympic chance with injuries as well. An incredible runner who might not go pro and instead embark on a career in Dentistry.
I don't think Ben Flanagan took the lead until about 600 to go in the Penn 5000. It was pulled along by an unheralded CPTC runner.
Was referring to his 4xmile run where he didn't take on the pace until it was 2:08 at 800. If Nuguse's goal was to break 3:35 and he sees the pacer go out at 56 plus with nobody pursuing, hanging back at 59 or so is just not gonna get it done. The unfortunate result that maybe was less predictable was that the all-out kick spawned an injury.
One day we will have a conversation on the disservice his "coach" Sean Carlson has had on his career.
Nguse was once one of the most promising athletes in the US, hopefully he can rebound from his struggles. He just needs to focus on graduating and getting to a real professional group.
Exactly.
Why was Nuguse running for Notre Dame at all for 5 seasons? WTH.....to run cross? WTH!
Didn't run at the Olympics, then ran cross for a 5th time last fall, doesn't score at indoor NCAA's in an individual event in 2022 (ran the DMR, which is only contested 2 times indoors) and now injured himself at a meet that really wasn't a track meet.
Here is the quote from Sean Carlson......... "Thursday’s 1500 prelim would have been getting greedy and he’s done so much for Notre Dame that we don’t want to jeopardize his professional future. Our bigger focus is making sure he’s healthy for the US championships [June 23-26]. We just thought that it seems like the best plan that’s kind of between where maybe he still has a shot of running in the NCAA while also protecting him.”
WTH!!??? If you were concerned about his professional future and not your present at Notre Dame, Nuguse should have turned pro after the 2021 track season, which was his 4th collegiate season competing. Yes, Carlson was very greedy.
If I'm Yared Nuguse, I would have turned pro at the end of NCAA's last year and definitely would turn pro today and skip the conference and NCAA meets (its not as if Notre Dame is the running to win either one or be anywhere near the top).
He's a great athlete who gave his all for his team over and over in past years and has had a rough, injury-plagued last ten months. However, it has to be noted that he still managed to be healthy enough in winter--at one time--to run a collegiate record 7:38 3000m.
Hindsight is 20/20. He likes being part of the team and wanted to continue his studies. Unfortunately, this year has been injury-plagued and the team stuff has fallen short in both Cross and the DMR. He's probably lost some money in the process, but if he can put it together and either make the US team or run a 3:33-34 or faster this summer maybe New Balance (will they ever sign an American MD guy?), Hoka or someone else offers a nice contract.
