The best high school athletes in the country will go head to head in Seattle on June 2nd. The event will also host professional events as part of this evening of FAST.
Anyone think Colin will move to the mile? With Gary already in the PNW, will they both run the mile that weekend at Nike Nationals? When does Nike announce their fields?
And the guy who just ran 4:00.95 solo isnt tough to beat?
A lot of guys have run a fast mile without a pacer. John Walker’s first 3:49 was solo and Hassan and Cheruiyot don’t need pacers. Martin’s splits were 60.2, 60.4 60.4 and 59.9. What would a pacer have done for him?

Ludicrous the distinction the NBP fanboy makes. Any Californian knows that private family wealth and parents associations raise enormous amounts of money in wealthy areas, making up for the fact that such areas tend to have declining student populations--and are thus harmed by the prop 13 tax limits and equal per student funding from the Serrano Priest decision--and undermining the egalitarian spirit of the latter decision. Any program with those kind of resources--which most families lack--is very much advantaged.

What are you talking about exactly? The fact that Newbury Park can afford to do a one month altitude training camp in the summer?
If they hadn't done any altitude training last summer, they still would have been the number 1 cross country team in the country. They just would have each run a few seconds slower.
There are lots of rich families in the United States, but their sons aren't running 4 minute miles. There's a lot more to the success of Newbury Park than just money.

Why single out NP? If you look at all the top XC programs from which the majority of the top distance runners come you'll find that most of them are located in affluent areas. In that regard NP is just one of many. NP may be more affluent than some of the other communities but not as affluent as others. Fund raising is done by many parents in many schools. If you're talking about the larger societal inequities maybe you have a point, but NP is no uber wealthy outlier.
NBP altitude camp is not funded by the HS xc budget. IT's a private family choice that anyone could make.
“That anyone could make?” What parallel universe do you inhabit?
What's your point? If they hadn't gone to altitude camp they would still have broken the indoor 4xMile record, but by "only" 20 seconds instead of 30 seconds.
I'm not sure exactly what you are complaining about. It's not money that is making them an all time great team.
I grew up in a lower middle class family. I funded 1 week church camp by collecting coupons and 2 weeks YMCA camp from my paper route. Our xc team did several events to raise money for cerebral palsy. We had no idea what an altitude camp was, but I'm sure if we felt it was necessary, the coaches, parents and team would have put our heads together to make it happen.
No rabbits. No other Newbury Park runners. No super shoes or mondo surface. On a classic rubberized black track, halfway in SW Missouri somewhere, windy April day, just these two. Who wins?
Where did you get the .5 seconds a lap benifit from pacers? Would Virgin have run 8:37 with pacers? During Bekele’s 10000m WR record, he ran 13:09 with pacers and then 13:08 without.
Cherry-picking one or two races doesn't tell you much. You could either do an energy cost calculation or you could run the numbers from a lot of paced races. What is obvious is that paced races are faster. There are psychological and physical benefits. And now we have Martin running sub-3:58, still without pacers to draft off of and to push him. Who would bet that he is capped at this time, winning by twenty seconds in a local scholastic meet?
Some people are just straight up idiots. Everybody knows drafting leads to faster times. Imagine this moron trying to convince Kipchoge to drop his pacers in breaking 2 because they don't matter. Unbelievable.
I think what sets Newbury Park apart from many other programs is that every kid in their top 10 or so (on the boys side) was running youth track and running quite fast at a young age.
Honest question can anyone else name a program who has every kid in their top 7 running sub 5 minutes for the mile in the 7th or 8th grade? I don't know if it is recruiting or kids are choosing to relocated to NBP, but it is interesting nonetheless.
Look up the Camarillo Cosmos on athletic net or the other teams. YOu will see all these guys were running fast at a young age.
