"For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" is a song written by Paul Simon. It is the tenth track on Simon and Garfunkel's 1966 album by Parsley, Sage, Rosemary an...
7th yes, but only 22 seconds back. Not exactly the disaster painted by those who probably can't run a mile at his 10,000m AR pace let alone 5000m that fast...
People also sometimes overlook the affect that long term marathon specialization can have on one’s speed. Rupp’s result here is basically meaningless; he remains a 2:06 marathoner who lined up for a workout and to get a taste of racing.

If there is any confusion, the title of this thread and my initial post were edited. My title was merely USATF 15K.
This is what an old Rupp who has spent too much time off due to injuries looks like.

This. If he's in 60:30/2:07:00 shape, he's still the best U.S. male marathoner. He certainly proved that at the last Trials. A long career with two Olympic medals and the 10,000m AR. He's lost the 13/27 speed after major surgery, 6 years of marathon focus, and reaching his mid 30s. But no one can credibly argue that he wasn't one of the greatest American distance runners ever. And name one American man who could beat him over 26 miles, even in 2022.
This is what a clean Galen Rupp looks like. No record breaker here. 42:31 which is barely sub 60 pace for a half marathon except he was only able to go 9.3 miles at sun 60 half marathon pace. Still a solid effort.
Galen is 35 y.o. and will be 36 in two months. His best days are behind him. Surely, if he stoped using some or all of the PEDs then the decline curve will get even steeper.
And chance he's just using this as a training race? The WCs are his focus and he's probably at the start of his training block for that.
Besides, anything up to HM is probably too short for him to be competitive. There's no reason why he can't still be sub 2:07 for the marathon

Tell me you have no idea about marathon training, and racing during marathon training, without telling me you have no idea about marathon training.

. . . and a similar so-so outcome to his pre-Olympic race at Peachtree (also dropped in the last mile and 20 seconds behind the winner) which was only a couple weeks after a respectable run in a better field at the 2021 OT 10,000 (dropped only when the kick began).

Ok, so I know this comes up all the time and I don’t want to be negative, just want commentators to listen and in start to embrace excitement and fun in their job. Today’s was just terrible. They just talked through a preset list of topics that were as boring as hearing that Elle Purrier once milked a cow.
They missed every interesting on-the-fly topic in front of them. Race within a race? Not really, they just told us it existed, but never said a moments speculation about it. Men’s race? We watched live as Rupp started to falter then got spit out the back, yet they were as of afraid to comment that he was breaking.
Was this because they wanted to go positive? No. They could have done so as Montonez maded a crushing move, but they sat there stupefied, taking a full minute to even say his name or really underscore what a power move it was. They also barely caught Bennie going for it. Instead they had to tell us Rupp and his kids live in simulated altitude. You want more audience? Stop telling the same story. Give a little of that (even new audiences will catch on) and instead tell these real story as it unfolds before you!!
last bit of rant, but Emily Sisson deserves her due! she took the pace out with two Emily pals at AR level. But all we heard over and over was their names, nothing to update the drama of whether she and she alone was still on AR pace. And I don’t want to hear the timing pads were off. So what. They could see the clock as she passed markers and do quick math (eg., 5:05 pace at 8 miles)
Do better.
Runners are a fun bunch with banter and commentary all throughout the Sunday long run. So why such dullards on the livestream? Put some fun into it and enjoy while you announce. Ugh.
When Rupp first fell back on the uphill, I thought he was just taking a break from leading. But then he went to the back of the pack and he grimaced very bad for a few steps and I think he raised his left hand to his left side like he was having a bad side stich. I'm not sure what causes that or what it means, but he was looking totally comfortable until he allowed the other guy (not the winner) take the lead then suddenly fell back to the back of pack and showed the discomfort.

How does how fast someone is have anything to do with them commenting on a professional runner? Should no one be allowed to comment on Aaron Rodgers failing in the playoffs other than super bowl winning quarterbacks?
Gate is more of less the same course...the former start was downtown instead of the football stadium. I believe TWill crested the highest point/Hart bridge 10k point at 28:04 in route....went through the first 5k in 13:50's...rollin. AR is legit

100% agree with this. A decent part of why running is so unpopular as a tv-spectator sport is the broadcasts and commentary are garbage. The shots often don't give you a good feel for how the race is actually going, and often it's better to watch muted than with sound.
Kind of expected on the women's side. Sisson dominates. Maybe gets the AR record on a better weather day. Durgin & Infeld flip from USA XC.
Thought Rupp was gonna win. Lead a lot of the race & looked good. But he wasn't able to gap the field. There was a point where it looked like a track meet, with everyone running single file. Was waiting for people to fall off but it never happened. Then everyone got left by Montanez on the bridge. He was great in his post race interview. Happy for him. Surprised that the gap was so big but that it actually ended up kind of tight at the line. Shows how hard of a move he made.
Sisson said she isn't running the 10k. Seems surprising with the World Champs in Oregon this summer. Said she wants to focus on the roads. Anybody know what races she's targeting? I didn't think she had announced a spring marathon. She's not announced for NYC Half. Wonder what's on the calendar that would outweigh Eugene 2022.

Wish the announcers would read this too. It’s like they’re afraid to have fun and talk to insiders, in hopes that if they tell a milking-cow story, then more people will suddenly love running.
Stick to the telling about the race! And yes about the people too, but with excitement for what they are doing *in the moment*. Both insiders and outsiders can get excited about that.
ps… I keep bringing up the milking-cow story. That’s not a knock on Elle Purrier, just a egregious example of poor commentary the past two years. I bet she certainly rolls her eyes when/if she hears it. More interesting to hear about her races unfolding and her 4:16 mile.
