How many Olympic and World Championship medals have Japanese runners won this century in the 1500 through marathon? How does that number compare to the US medal count?
This exact argument is always brought up and it's complete garbage. We're talking about the marathon, don't bring every single distance into it. The Japanese men are better than the Americans in recent history and they have far more depth. That's just a fact right now and the depth has always been really. What was Rupp today? 7th at a US championship race. Don't even bring him up. His medal was 8 years ago.
I was responding to a statement about “running culture.” Running culture includes more than the marathon.
Look at all these sub 2:09 Japanese guys!!! Wow...
LIke 22 of them
When an American runs 2:09+ once, and feels entitled to a shoe deal, they have to cite races like this as to why its so difficult to get a sponsorship.

They're obsessed with distance running and we aren't. They have corporate sponsors that keep people who are on the fringes in it for years and support them so they have the time they need to develop and become good athletes. Our athletes in that same position toil away alone without much assistance. And they had that huge government bonus for setting a national record in the marathon. The Japanese just flat out care about running more than we do and they are more disciplined. Pretty much every good Kenyan distance runner that came up in the Japanese system has said they have a better running culture than Kenya does when they've been asked about it. They're just better at it.
In these perilous times we inhabit it is sometimes appropriate to lighten the mood of appropriate and inappropriate humor in order to bring out the humanity of living in difficult times. Those that oppose my humor are the ones that have no qualms of living under the oppression of tyrannical regimes such as those of Putin's Russia, Xi's China, Un's North Korea, and others.

Good grief, you're delusional. I don't think that many "oppose your humor" as find you annoying as hell. What a freaking ego.

I maintain that running culture includes more than the marathon. Otherwise this site would be called letsmarathon.com.
Even if you want to limit the discussion to just the marathon, the US has more runners with podium finishes at World Marathon Majors in the last 12 years than Japan:
Japan, 9 (4 men + 5 women): Yuki Kawauchi, Yuta Shi*ara, Arata Fujiwara, Suguru Osako, Tomo Morimoto, Yukiko Akaba, Noriko Highchi, Yoko Shibui, and Kayoko Fukushi
USA, 12 (4 men + 8 women): Galen Rupp, Meb Keflezighi, Shadrack Biwott, Abdi Abdirahman, Shalane Flanagan, Desiree Linden, Sara Hall, Jordan Hasay, Sarah Sellers, Amy Cragg, Emma Bates, and Molly Huddle
And if you look at the last two Olympics, it’s USA 2, Japan 0.

What if you take out the African men from the list? Then it’s 9 and 9.

Um, Rupp's medal was 6 years ago, not 8. And he just finished second in the Chicago marathon 5 months ago. I didn't see any Japanese runners on the podium at that race.

That’s fair, but the US “running culture” ,as far as there is one, is based around sprints.
The WMM is somewhat a good comparison, but to be fair three of them are in the US and US pros are almost always completely focused on those. NY and Boston are slower and better suited to have slower Americans placing.

Maybe it’s because the Japanese couldn’t get into America at that time?
All these freaking Japanese men coming in under 208. lol. What are they got that we ain’t got?
The Americans spend the netire HS/college running and training for mid distances on the track. No wonder you have world class mid/5k runners and comparatively sucks at longer distances.
Japanese running culture is just so far above and beyond the State's. Imagine the headlines if at any US race there were even just 5 Americans under 2:09.
