Definitely thought the same thing. MacLean didn't even look like she was breathing hard post race and then seemed to be avoiding eye contact with Purrier St. Pierre. Purrier didn't even glance in her direction. Very weird interaction (or non-interaction) between teammates
They aren't just teammates. They are very close friends.
Maybe Maclean just felt bad at denying her close friend the opportunity to go to the world championships.
Exactly.
It's like Maclean knew Purrier would be crushed emotionally and didn't want to rub it in
4 weeks ago at Millrose Games Purrier was in a completely different class compared to MacLean, go figure... maybe picked up a small injury, she didn't race at the New Balance as originally planned.
The more curious thing for me was MacLean's reaction. She won her first national title and didn't look like she was too excited. Obviously she was but she didn't show it.
Does anyone else think this is because she was shocked to actually beat Purrier who she trains with everyday? I assume Elle hands it to her in practice most days as well.
In high school, I used to get crushed by my teammate. He beat me in college as well. I'm sure the first time I beat him I was shocked but also wouldn't want to put it in his face with a big celebration.
Interesting, I can't help but recall when Quigley beat Shelby at USA indoors for the mile title. Colleen did nothing to conceal just how excited she was, posting all over social media and in the press. I think Colleen deserved that moment as did Heather but I wonder how much of what Colleen did that daw sowed friction in the team before she left the group.
I would love to see the photo finish. Looked for it and did not see. Every time I watched it I saw Norris as a slight 3rd. Obviously not the case or the results would not stand.

I think she's so used to being the top dog on the team, now that she's not, she was sulking. Imagine Pippen rising up and owning Jordan. How do you think Jordan would react.
Yes. Elle was sulking and Heather, always previously content to be in Elle's shadow, has asserted herself in her understated manner. And even in her win going kind of under the radar because it was awkward to beat her teammate and friend. But not a good look for Elle Purrier St. Pierre. Actually embarrassing. Showing grace and happiness for others success is classy. At one point after the race Heather glanced over at Elle but Elle walked on by.

All the posts referring to "glances" have been deleted . It might be best for Heathers career to join the Boss group. To many chickens in the coup at NB Boston. And agree , easy for Elle to be happy bouncing around and hugging people when she wins . The only thing left for Heather is turn your back and walk away if Elle wins the next one.

This. Maclean didn’t look tired at all…very bizarre
In her post race interview, she was definitely breathing heavy.

I'm not sure she knew who had won.
Great race for her. Slam dopers when they get caught. There shouldn't be so many accusatory posts when she's never done anything to raise concern.
Yeah I think it’s just really bad taste she didn’t congratulate her friend. Also seems like everytime Elle wins the whole NB Boston crew is posting like crazy and it’s pretty discouraging that we’re not seeing the same energy when Heather wins.
I feel like heather would fit in really well at team Boss. All the ladies seem to truly support each other even when they don’t have the best race (Emma falling at the Olympic final and still being gracious to Courtney Freichs on her silver medal).

This was the first time in 17 races that MacLean beat Purrier St, Pierre, and it was by only a few hundredths of a second,. And it might not even have happened if Purrier St. Pierre hadn't started looking around. No one got "owned" here.
Maclean is a rising star. If you look at her mechanics it's clear she has a super high ceiling - she has a long, bouncy stride and good top end speed. She just didn't have as strong of a training background until the last 1-2 years. Props to Mark Coogan for getting that under her - and now she's really an elite miler.
If she stays healthy she could have an impact on the world stage. Not there yet, but the potential is there.
Also, I think Heather is feeling confident and realizes she belongs in elite company. And I agree she may long-term be better suited for the 1500m than Purrier- St Pierre.
