Is it common for coaches to use pushups as punishment?
If they suck at being a coach.
Using exercise as punishment is a good way to reinforce conditioning as a negative thing for athletes. Although it’s a common punishment, it’s not a good one IMO. You don’t want to teach your athletes to hate strength and conditioning exercises.

It was common back in the 70's during gym class and after school sports. That and running laps.
Push-ups in front of everyone and burpees for being late
Its Like writing essays on your bad behavior.
I used to get punished for my essays on my bad behavior in parochial school.

My high school coach would use them as punishment for swearing. It worked in both ways; I swore less, and I certainly got very good at pushups.
Anyone who has been through bootcamp knows that push ups can be an effective form of discipline. With that said I can't see it as an effective form of punishment outside the military, unless you as a coach or leader had complete leverage over your athletes.
I remember it like yesterday, Sgt. Bland - "Drop and give me 50 son" all day every day for 3 1/2 months. I still enjoy doing them today.
