A few years ago there was a proposal to go to a 2 step qualifying to the NCAA meet. Instead of the traditional pre-nats weekend, the 9 regionals would be held on this weekend. Same regionals as they are now. The top 10 teams from each regional then move on. The next meet (the new super regional) would be the same weekend as the traditional regionals (this past weekend). There would be 3 of them with 30 teams from 3 regionals at each(plus any conference champs that did not qualify at regionals). Not sure which regionals would go to what super regional (something like NE, Mid-A, and SE would be one super regional). From the each super regional the top 10 teams would qualify to the NCAA, with I think one at-large team. So 31 teams at NCAA Champs. All head-to-head qualifying, you know when you leave each meet if you move on or not. This was voted down by the NCAA XC coaches.
