Had this for decades, including while running for a D1 team. Now, with that 30 years behind me, I manage with diet, strength work, and weed.

Well the podiatrist diagnosed via MRI that I had osteoarthritis
Work into it and you will be just fine. There is a lot of evidence to support that being physically active is just fine with OA. Start off with a walk and jog for quite awhile. Slowly building into it. Like really slowly! Don’t be afraid to cross train.
I just can't believe I got osteoarthritis at 19

Steve o is correct again. Most doctors I work with (they’re all a$$holes) hate running so of course they’ll say don’t do it. Look at those fat fuc$s. They don’t have your body so tell them to take their vaccinations and shove them up their a$$. Get the right shoes and work on your hip stability. Fuc$ all doctors. Podiatrists are not real MDs.
Whoa that is some serious hostility. I guess you’ve had bad experiences with doctors?

Ain't that the truth. I would have missed many years of running had I directly followed my doctor's advice to the letter.
That’s true. Most doctors are only vaguely aware of what exercise can do for the body, and are quick to suggest being sedentary.
Have you tried Buffalo collagen?
Do you actually have pain that’s keeping you from running?
Yes
I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis of the knee at 30. Told I should never run again. Took six months off of running but religiously biked and did weight workouts that agreed with the knee and strengthened my quads. Then when I came back to running, I started very slowly, 1 mile a day on grass easy and built from there. I am now 34 and this weekend I was only 20 seconds slower than my pre-injury 5K turkey trott (with room for improvement). Your body is adaptable. Just listen to it and do exercises that it can handle and build up slowly. Be patient and consistent and you'll be fine. Now I run every day because I realized that the biggest reasons for my injuries was taking time off and trying to make quick comebacks when I was inspired or had a race.
After suffering suffering with knee pain and swelling after Lyme disease, I finally saw an orthopedic surgeon. He spent all of 10 seconds looking at my X-rays and MRI, and told me to find another sport. I went home devastated.
After I gathered myself up, I made an appointment with a different orthopedic surgeon who also is a runner. His name is Dr. Howard Luks, in NY. You can google his blog, much of it is on OA and running. He spent 30-45 min manually examining my knees, and looking at my MRI with me. According to him, my MRI was pretty normal for my age (43 at the time), and stopping running would be a mistake.
I went on to add more cross training. (cycling/swimming/stregnth), and hired a running coach who is a DPT by trade. Ive since run harder, faster, and without any pain.
The take away is this.
You know your body better than anyone else. You will know what you should and shouldn't do.
Don't take running advice from a doctor who isn't a runner. Plenty are, find one.
Consider cross training. Especially if you are old like me.
Find someone to analyze your gait and recommend strength exercises to make you a better healthier runner.

Well, it just scares me knowing my doctor is telling me to give up running
You never started running. You're just trolling for attention.
I was diagnosed with stage 2 osteoarthritis of the hips at the start of the year after suffering acute pain in my right hip. Told not to run again and to take up cycling.
After a couple of months break from running, I took up sprinting workouts every other day.
Almost no pain in my right hip now. I probably had an injury that was causing my acute hip pain and that has largely cleared up now. Likely had the osteosarthritis for years.
Supplements have probably helped too. I started taking Undenatured collagen (UC-II), and Boswellia serrata extract - the two things that studies have found to work.

How does it matter what the medical authorities on LR say when, as you say, you are in pain and your doctor is saying no more running?

It's more replies that he gets off to.

Fascinating, the things that turn on people. I see that the Reddit imgur link posted some time back has been moderated out.
Well I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my left hip at age 58. I am now 65 and my hip is now crushed into my pelvis . Run? 6hit walking is difficult now . Ran through the pain for the past 7 years . Hip will be replaced on December 21.

I think a lot of us tried to help at one point or another and realized that it never went anywhere. We were all unknowing participants in his fetish.

Oh yeah, I too fell for it a few months back. I was typing out many paragraphs of things I had read about and had learned from experience about plantar fasciitis back when he was a PF whino when I noticed other posters taunting him and even wondered why people were being so mean to him. Then I looked up the snooroar subreddit and the consistent and easily recognizable pattern of his posts.
Wonder whatever happened to his PF. Did he just silently stop whining about PF and move on to the navicular region?
