Agree! Good race for Seth but frustrating that he trains that way. With speedwork he could easily go sub 2:20.

dropping 10+ minute miles right now...yikes
So easy to see his mistakes. Too much racing, too many miles not enough focus on this race. I don’t think he understands it takes weeks of specific speedwork to adapt to race pace. It doesn’t happen in two weeks of nilly willy speedwork.
Looks like he might have dropped out?
Is the live tracking correct??? It's showing him dropping 10 min/miles on track to finish 2:50.... what a disaster!

Over 3hrs. Hard to be a fan when he continues to train in this outlandish way.
Can Marathon experts tell me what SJD is doing wrong in his training for the Marathon?

From what he says on the channel, he wants to be the best trail runner he can be — eventually running 100-milers (his posts from UTMB suggested that.) To that, the marathon/OTQ is fun and all, but I believe Seth has his priorities, that's all.
You can`t just do a lot of slow mileage and think you gonna run fast at the marathon. You got to do fast tempo runs or/ and fast LT -intervals or/ and close to maxVO2 runs.
I don’t know what you watching he does do those workouts as well.
Not enough. Takes a while to adapt to race pace. He needs a few months not just 3 or 4 weeks. What he do ? Just 3-4 track sessions? You are setting yourself up for injury too.
he did admit before the race that his training was not ideal and that he doesn't recommend others to follow this plan. he did say no injury but GI issues got him around mile 11. if anything his stated goal to PR was attainable.
He needs two things: a proper coach and a good sports psychologist.
The coach will focus his training energies in the proper direction.
The shrink will also get him focused and break him of his own tendencies to self sabotage.
My personal theory is that his online fan base keeps reinforcing his failures and frames them as positives in his mind. He talks big, they cheer him on. He fails, they send him money and flood the comments and chats with, "You are still my hero! Get 'em next time champ!". Hosting a sad livestream gets you more validation and rakes in more cash than a celebration video. It's a strange landscape where a 2:09 guy can't get a contract but, folksiness and failure brings in the money. Perhaps this is what SJD really wants?
He needs a nutritionist and a coach.
His weird Palio type diet has to be binned. He looks malnourished. He’s afraid of carbohydrates except in the few days before a race. This and the lack of sleep will ruin him. He’s punishing his body and it’s sad to see.
