This is pretty early, but given the incredible performance of Newbury Park thus far in the season, it's obvious that they are the best HS team ever. In the LRC tradition of setting high expectations for teenagers, what do you want/think Newbury Park will accomplish by the end of the outdoor season?
From least likely to most likely things I'd kill to see happen:
2 kids go sub-4
2 kids under 14:00
2+ individual national HS records
2+ relay national HS records
3+ sub 8:40
My reasoning goes like this: I don't think the juniors can make the jump to a sub-4 mile this year. Colin Sahlman might be able to, but it's a big ask for a junior to drop a sub-4.
I think at least one of them has a good shot at sub-14, Nico did it twice during COVID, so with proper training and teammates, I can see 2 of them dipping under 14.
I think that at least one of them has the potential to break some record from 2k-5k. Maybe Colin can break Nico's 3k indoor record and give the 5k record a scare. The 5k record is strong but I think if COVID hadn't happened, Nico would have gotten close to 13:40, and there's a decent chance one of them is in better shape than Nico was by outdoor.
I think any relay above 800 (maybe even the 800) is theirs for the taking. Simple as that.
Nico ran 8:40.00 to cap off his junior year. Both of his brothers are in better shape now than Nico was during his junior year XC season, and Sahlman is too. In an Arcadia style 2 mile, I'd bet they can all dip under 8:40.
