Roads are not bouncy like a track, and you don’t get the grip advantage of the spikes. Basically the mechanical doping the spikes give is not there so you wear a different shoe that gets you half way there.
You can see why Hocker is being built up so much. The men's 1500 in the US is in a bad place right now. No one is pushing on in an era when 3:30 is the norm at the top level. Hocker will almost certainly get there, and Nuguse could offer some hope but after those two, the US down to 3:35 guys which doesn't cut it at the moment. The hard front runners aren't going away any time soon, Jakob, Cheruiyot and McSweyn are all young, so US men need to adapt. Right now, Kenya, Australia, Britain, and even Spain are all so much stronger
